With LP turbo, I would think that you'd loose the torque? Boy, our XT is freaking thirsty. It gets about what the Taco does. It does get a longer commute trip though.

I would be willing to bet that an MT hooked to that motor would see a few more MPGs at least in real life. I begged my Wife to wait for the 2015 WRX, but she really wanted the Fozzy.

I've always been able to meet or beat the window stickers while having fun with MTs. ATs are a struggle to get close on the city side and average.

I had the same mod in two different wrangler, but it was just a cable for them. Roast clutch too much backing up tractor or trailer with any kinda load, up slight grade, so this will be great. Not sure why Toyota and Aisin decided to gear like we needed to go 40mph in reverse. But, Aisin did the same thing in the Wranglers...o_O

No truck with cvt in existance yet. Don't think they can do it due to a varying load.

They decided they couldnt mess up an automatic transmission any worse than the 3rd gen Tacomas so they'e moving on to try and make the clunkiest possible CVT.

I ditched my 15 Corolla with the CVT and bought my Tacoma because it didn't have one. I wanted to get a Tacoma anyway. I found the CVT with 4 cylinders to be very annoying. I loved my previous 04 Corolla but hated what Toyota did to the 15. No power when you punch it to merge with traffic and it felt like I had a engine brake going down hills among other things. We have the CVT in my wife's Sienna and it works with the V6 well enough except it seems to slip in between gears going down hills. I am no fan of CVTs.

We wanted an Outback in 2015 with the V6 without the CVT for the wife's car. I missed it by a year as the 2015 only came in CVT. In 2015 , the V6 with CVT was rated to tow 3500 lbs if I remember correctly . The same V6 with CVT in 2016 was rated to tow 1500 lbs. Subaru must have learned something they did not advertise to have to drop the rating .
Glad we did not get one.

Really? I didn't think there was a tow rating in the US / Canada for any Subby CVT over 1,500lb? There was a lot of talk about why other than the CVT itself, esp the uprated one on the 2.0L DiTs. Some felt that there were some small body / subframe reinforcements that we don't get. Just about everywhere else in the damn world, the base and turbo models had a 2,000kg (4,400lb) rating.

It has been a couple years . It was 3000 lb.

With either engine, sluggish launch performance (from a standing start) is our only complaint, really; for the four, it doesn’t seem to be an issue of the rather narrow range of ratios from the CVT sets the four-cylinder engine off on a rather tall starting ratio. That said, the Outback can tow up to 3,000 pounds with the 3.6R or 2,700 with the 2.5i, provided you keep the tongue weight down to 200 pounds.

    EDIT -
I see now that the numbers are changed in that the 2016 had the same rating . i was pretty sure when i looked it up in 2016 that it had dropped . Sorry .

I've noticed that also. It seems to think about something before really launching. The s# mode on ours helps a lot. In the end, the thing is pretty damn quick. The slight delay is just odd. The turbo is on the small side and feels a bit wheezy up top. I don't specifically know if it really is boost taper or programming.

I guess they did learn something that model year? A year back, we did get a letter about free extended warranty on the CVT.

Also, I wasn't disagreeing with you. I just found it odd about that one black sheep year. ;)

thats wrong.. i looked into it and made sure when we bought our 2016 outback to make sure it would tow what i needed it to tow.

2016 outback 4cyl with cvt was rated at 2700 punds towing..
2016 outback v6 with cvt was rated at 3000 pounds towing.

not rated for much tongue weight though...

the forrester is rated quite a bit less then the outback. maybe thats what you are thinking of..

Subby tow ratings are just a puzzle and a pain for buyers.

I wish we would get axle locations like the Euro countries so the tongue load could work on smaller cars.

Thinking back about what full size trucks used to put out power-wise in the 70s and 80s, their crap reliability, and what they would tow, it is funny how little we actually use what we got these days.

Good for you to actually get out there with something people don't think is a tow vehicle.

I had a 4x8 trailer behind our long gone saab and volvos hauling 2yds of mulch. The trailer axle was riding on the frame rails. I knew it was back there, but the cars hardly felt it.

My 2016 Subaru crosstrek had a cvt and it sucked...advertised mpg of 34 but never once did I get it above 29-30 mpg on long highway commutes..plus they just drive like shit

My wife’s Honda Civic has 70k miles and I’ve had no problems with the CVT. I’ve changed the cvt fluid every 30,000 miles though. They require more maintenance than a standard transmission.

Given the typical Subby buyers, it is odd that they don't offer MTs and turbos (thanks GranTurismo!) in every model as an option.

A turbo in the new crosstrek might be a much better car,but after putting 45k miles on the Subaru it was a happy day when the Toyota dealer took it. I do like Subaru’s just not a fan of the crosstrek anymore..now looking to replace the crosstrek with a vw alltrack to get the dsg

Compared to the Chevy Equinox I bought instead of the Outback I have lost an extra $4000 in residual value after 32K and 3 years.
I have had no problems so time will tell . We plan to keep it for another 7 years or so. Our last 3 GM cars all lasted 12 + years with no major problems .2 of them still going . The wife is planning on an electric - maybe self driver for the Equinox replacement . I want to keep the 2016 Tacoma long after ! The day an uber or self driving truck can pick me up at 4:00 am , hook up my boat and take me to the lake , and lauch me ................. then pick me up without waiting ........ well I should live so long .

Only experience I had is pretty much the same... my sister had an 09 murano that died randomly in the middle of a 4 lane highway, the car was just shy of 100k miles, tranny fluid leaking out... or cvt fluid. Vehicle was fixed under warranty and traded in the next day. These transmissions may have improved since then but I don’t trust them. I like old fashioned proven technology that works and lasts. I’ll avoid a cvt transmission at all costs as long as I can. Whatever it takes.
