I have a '01 4runner. I've decided on the ST Maxx tires. I had originally considered 255/85's, but eventually was all but convinced to go with 285/75's... and then I find this thread.

The 255's look great on most of the Tacoma's here. They don't look too skinny or too tucked in. I'm trying to figure out why a lot of the pictures of 255's on 3rd gen 4runners often don't look as good? I'm honestly a little bit surprised, I would have thought it would be the other way around since the earlier tacoma's/4runner have a narrower look and tires look bigger on them. Is it because I'm looking at other brand 255 tires and they don't look as wide? Is it because of the body style differences? Is it because you have to have a certain backspacing for them to look appropriate?

I'm planning on buying the Pro comp 52 Rock Crawlers. They have 4" BS. I'm having trouble finding a 3rd gen 4runner (or even a 1st gen tacoma) running something similar to see if it works or not.

I'm running them in 265/65-17, also E. when you get to this diameter (stock for our trucks), the rules change a bit due to the loss of compliance from just not having enough tire to flex. i run at low pressure, about 30F &27R warm, and they are still like driving on little rubber rocks.

which is one of the reasons i have and love them. ;)

Any guys with 285/75/16’s, ever go over 80mph? I vibe a tad bit starting at 77mph. I don’t run a sway bar so I normally stay around 70 ain’t the highways. but just wondering

Only to pass... mine hum extremely loud anytime over 70 though. ST Maxx I think are rated around 88-92mph wouldn't want to go past that anyways...

I wouldn't trust these tires for evasive maneuvers past 80-85, as they're not a street tire.

Mine don't hum around 70 really, how many miles do you have?

When I say hum. I came from a 265/70/16 dynapro hankook that we’re quite till they were raw. I’ve got about 7-8k miles on them I love them and they’re wearing great. It’s just the road noise.

    Hankooks were a P load

ST MAXXS are a E load- course these are gonna be louder

I’ve noticed my are tend to make a low drumming noise. Kinda relaxing to me, which isn’t that good when you’re on a road trip :anonymous:

Here is my first gen on 255/85/16 on 2007 T4R wheels. I also have 1.25" spacers.
    IMG_20170613_191829.jpg

    IMG_20170613_191654.jpg

The wheels are 16x7 with an offset of 30 mm. with the spacers, roughly 31mm, I'm at about 0 offset or 4"bs (relatively). This is the closest pic I have right now that shows where they sit, but they are really close to flush with the fenders. Tucked in just a hair.

Someone chime in if I botched the BS calculation. I always get confused...

Not entirely sure on the wheel weight, but I believe around 22-25 and the tire is 59 lbs according to Cooper . so low to mid 80's each corner.

i do, because the lateral portion of these is much stronger than sport and street tires. if you load the edge with weight and know how to steer off that, they are aggressive for quick weight shift maneuvers. speaking from experience. lots of it.

There's a reason there's speed/load ratings, unless you know something that the engineers at R&D don't.

i know more than you think. it's about understanding the driving part. not the on paper part. I'm not arguing, I'm busy doing things in my truck that some folks say isn't possible.

Interested in your driving credentials. Not for arguments sake, for curiosity's sake. What’re you doing in your truck that some would say is not possible?

come take a ride. don't know what to say to you. but I've setup my truck for fairly aggressive on road handling and that makes a difference. these tires are the jewel of the setup. their extreme firmness as an E range tire is exaggerated in the 265/65-17 size. so if you can load the side wall and lateral portion of the tire it won't give much and you can rebound back if you know how to handle the vehicle at speed like this. it's simple driving, but track technique, not normal on road technique. very few road cars are even setup to be able to do that. and these tires are just terrific at that.

for the non-emergency maneuvers you're moving more gradually, so you can't use this technique. at that point the speed rating and general grip are a normal picture. taking a wide radius curve at high speed, for example... that's where what he said applies. these tires have little grip in that scenario. but for fast jerking maneuvers, if you know how to weight load correctly, these tires can do it better than most... including many sports car tires, because the sidewalls are more compliant with those. the compliance allows tires to mold to the road and give ongoing 'static' grip, but at the expense of firmness, which is where what I'm talking about applies.

Looking for some tires for my ‘12 DCSB, w/ 5100s/886s/JBA UCAs, Icon AALs and soon to be installed FJ Cruiser TRD Beadlock Style Wheels, PTR18-35090
(16” x 7.5”, 4.75” backspacing), and after reading this whole thread, decided on some ST Maxx, 285/75R16s. Found some on TireCrawler for $220/each, but curious if that’s a good price or not. Anyone purchase the same size recently?
