Kill Switch Mod Write Up.

Great idea .You also might want to wire a back up switch also.Did my sisters 04 taco and switch gave out . Wired it in side of console so wires wasnt easy to get to.Wired another one behind glove box for back up.Main one goes out just turn on back up.

 

Questions..

1. If the switch "goes out", wouldn't the circuit in essence be cut, hence what would the sense of a secondary switch be if the current wouldn't go pass the first switch.

Had something like this in college in my '99 accord.. Put an inline with the fuel pump though, so the sucker wouldn't even start.. (no gas)..

2. Is this something similar where if you flipped the switch off (while car was running) the car would stop? Or is this just to start the car?

3. How easily bypassed would this be unless you found the switch?

After just spending another couple hours "researching" TW, I see that the whole "key chip" security can be bypassed as well. Will be doing this mod soon..

Hemitruk: Not sure if my eyes are bad looking at your small avitar... are those BHLM on your taco?

 

1) If you put the secondary switch in the same circuit you're right. However, and this would be more complicated, but if you would wire up a parallel circuit and put the switch in that secondary circuit, it would work as expected.
2) It's not a switch per see. It's a momentary push button closing the starter circuit. Not needed after the car is cranked up.
3) Not at all, unless the thief knows the wiring diagram of the vehicle and traces the starter circuit wires. That is, if he would even suspect it's the starter circuit that is broken, and not some other anti-theft mechanism.

couldn't have said it better myself. I have already had friends take my keys thinking they are funny and try and move my truck to a diff parking spot or drive it around and they come back worried that my truck is broken.

would a switch on the fuel pump be "better"? Just asking.. This would be a pretty fast mod. As for the "switch", anyone know of a factory switch that could be used in place of a aftermarket one? I was even thinking of putting a second foglight switch, hooking this up to that, and putting it in the off position when I park somewhere sketchy. But if one of the factory dash buttons were momentary, that would help too. Just like the "in pain sight" but not what yould expect idea..

 

Oznium.com has some switches that will work. They're listed as Scion switches, but I made them work in my 08 regular cab std. Had to shave a little of dash plastic with a razor knife. The old plug and new switch still stayed in place after shaving.
They don't look like regular factory push button switches, but work better (and look better ) than the blue, thru plug ones.

Just my 2 cents, but I would cut/splice the wire much deeper into the firewall or even in the engine bay, if it goes there, because if the thief in question knows anything about hotwiring, he's going to see the ignition wire going to that switch.

If everything looked intact from the driver's seat, then that switch could be for anything, and a thief will be less likely to figure it out.

Good for keeping your friends from stealing your keys and going on joyrides, though

Are you referring to a magneto and Battery safety kill switch?

He's talking about a hidden magnetic sensing switch (right?). You have to swipe a magnet across it to start the vehicle. Can be hidden anywhere you can put a wire.
My grandfather had one in his Grand Marquis. He never complained about it. If it was crap, we would have heard!

Nice I had one on my '71 c-10, it was a toggle up under the dash though and mine would kill the motor if you kicked it off.

 

sorry, i was working on my retrofit this weekend.

What I am referring to is a magnetic reed switch. Similar to that used in home alarm installs. But yes, basically you hide the switch behind a panel, in the seat, etc. That way nothing is visible. All you do is run a magnet over the area, it triggers the switch and the additional relays keep the circuit closed which allows your car to start, when you turn the key.

As for battery kills and ignition kills, that is definitely not the best way to go. While it is still semi effective on an auto, anyone can still pop the clutch on a manual and bypass that system. What you want to cut is the fuel pump circuit.

Ill do a write up this weekend, and post it if i have time. If anyone wants one, I will look into making the kits.

 

That could be a real bad idea.... I can already see someone accidently hitting that going down the highway!! Can you say siezed engine??

 

I am very interested if you write something up. A quick bit of research has shown that fuel pump cut off switches are indeed the most effective way of preventing drive-away-auto thefts.

It will not hurt the engine if the fuel pump stops. It would be no different than running out of gas. However, if the fuel pump does stop, about 5 seconds later the engine would quit and the power steering would go out, so you my have a problem steering the vehicle.

I recall once upon a time that fuel-pump-cut off switches were illegal, but I did some searching of the interwebz and I can't find any credible source where it says that it's illegal. It could have been a Kalifornia thing too...

If anyone knows for sure, please let me know.

 

Why don't you just disable the fuel injectors or the coils?
