So you wouldn't buy a 2018 solely for a new safety system (TSS) that never was even on older models and can be disabled anyways? Just trying to see the logic here. (serious question as I'm looking to go 2018, too). I think from here on out all trucks will have this, too.

Yeah, I don't get his logic either. I can't, for the life of me, understand why there are so many people out there that are so afraid of the whole TSS thing. Toyota basically released a PSA about TSS and lifting/modding the new Tacoma to cover their own asses. That's it! If you have someone that knows what they're doing (@JerryTaco) install your suspension, Pro Grille, or anything else involving TSS, you will have ZERO issues. I think all who have had issues with TSS tend to not be careful with this shit when they're taking it apart or putting it back together.

As I've said before, my TSS works exactly as it did when I drove it off of the lot back in December. I have not had anything light up on the dash, adaptive radar is awesome, lane departure is spot on, etc. They all work perfectly fine without any "re-calibration" from the dealer.

Right. And for people looking to buy a 2018 and want the reassurance the TSS still works properly, can't you pay to have a recalibration anyways? Did Toyota say they won't warrantee or not allow their dealerships to install lifts, or did they just make a PSA covering their arse?

I'd imagine all trucks moving forwards will have safety features so obviously there will be workarounds to have it all work correctly after mods.

Yes, you can pay to get TSS re-calibrated if you want and Toyota did initially say that dealerships won't be doing lifts on the 2018s but I've seen many dealerships lifting the 2018s even after that announcement. Lifting a truck won't void your warranty either. The failed Toyota part has to be proven to have been a direct result of any aftermarket mod that was installed. So, if I only had a suspension lift on my truck and a computer or my JBL head unit failed, (as examples) that would be covered under warranty. If I blew an ICON shock out, obviously that's not covered by Toyota, but it probably would be under ICON's warranty. My suspicion is that Toyota realized that a 3" lift has no effect on TSS and therefore individual dealers have started doing them. I've also heard that if you buy a lifted Tacoma from the dealership, they make you sign some sort of release form but I don't think I really believe that. I haven't seen any evidence so until I do, I still won't believe it.

All Tacomas from now on will have TSS in some form.

I'm thinking the form you sign is saying if the TSS doesn't work as well, you can't blame them. But who relies on TSS for accident prevention anyways?? Previous models didn't even have TSS so not sure why people care so much. If you lift or mod, just be prepared that the fancy TSS stuff might not work as well... or have it recalibrated.

Exactly! I've had Toyota trucks and Tacomas since I've been driving and never had TSS before. I pay attention when I'm driving so it doesn't really matter to me and the adaptive radar is awesome! A lot of people just don't seem to understand the technology and expect the truck to drive itself so they can text or do other shit when they're supposed to be paying attention. I don't even turn TSS of when I'm off-road, it knows and adapts accordingly. I'm sure if there was a problem with it, my truck would tell me about it.

Yeah, there are quite a few. Some with bad experiences but most with no issues. The ones with bad experiences usually break shit and it ends up costing them a lot of money.

What are the bad experiences exactly? Breaking TSS during installs?

The biggest issue I've seen is people breaking the ABS sensors which I don't even know how they could do that. The only way I can see that happening is if they're not careful and just ripping the old shit out and knocking the sensor with the shocks or something.

Is that TSS/2018 specific, or is that ABS sensor on older models as well?

I'm sure it's happened to people's ABS sensors on older models too but the ABS sensors are a big part of TSS now with the pre-collision part of it. That being said, if you break an ABS sensor on a 2018, TSS errors are going to pop up all over the dash. So when that happens, people freak the fuck out and start spreading rumors that it's the fault of TSS. A 3" lift will have no negative effect on the adaptive radar or the camera in the windshield. As an example, if you take a picture of a landscape (which it essentially does) with your phone, then raise the phone up 3" at the exact same angle and take another picture, how different are the pictures really?

Yeah. And the sole fact you can pay to have it all calibrated is extra reassurance for people concerned.

Exactly! I don't understand how people hear something and then get stuck inside their little box. "so & so said this, so that's my thinking from here on out." NO! I'm not saying everything I say is correct at all, I just don't do "inside the box" or follow the crowd without my own proof, especially on the internet these days .

As it should be. Toyota didn't say you CAN'T do it, they just said their dealers can't install them as it MIGHT mess with the TSS. And besides, this means no one will ever buy a new truck after 2017? Its ridiculous. I posted in the thread on the third gen page about it on the thread they have going called "2018 no lifts"
