Hello everyone, first off i'm sorry because i barely know anything about cars/trucks. I was wondering if anyone could give me advice and information about my 2001 tacoma that basically when I fill the tank the nozzle would keep shutting off. When i pull the lever all the way or even just half it would shut off, the only way for me to fill it up is to squeeze just a quarter ( i tried every gas station and its all the same). I have search everywhere on internet and just could not find a clear answer. I also pulled the air drain hose tonight and its clean no obstruction whatsoever. What could be the problem? Please be specific as i have almost to no knowledge when it comes to being a mechanic. With pictures would greatly help , thank you.

Have you tried pulling the nozzle out just a little? My wife's car will do this too. If you pull the nozzle out about halfway, it won't shut off.

I also had this problem on my old Explorer for a while, and nothing seemed to work. I pulled the filler neck off of the tank to see if there were any obstructions and didn't find anything. However, when I hooked everything back up, it worked fine. Not sure what the problem was there.

I have not, i will try it next time. And that's interesting with pulling the filler neck, i might also do that too. And did you have to empty your tank or just leave a little bit before pulling the filler neck out for safety?

At my work we have a fleet of Ford trucks and it does the same thing you are describing when I go to fill up at a Shell gas station. Ill pull up the clip to have the gas nozzle pump without me holding the handle, and by itself it’ll keep disengaging, so ill have to redo it again over and over even though its not full of gas. Ive tried changing the angle on the nozzle. I dont know if its something wrong with their pumps or the trucks but I have a feelings its the pumps, Ive never had a problem at Arco.

Yeah idk, most of the time when I fill my work trucks up with gas I have to squeeze the nozzle trigger the whole time and sometimes itll keep loosing pressure on the handle so Ill have to resqueeze the gas nozzle again. And this happens to 4 different Ford Trucks and 1 Ford Transit and they all do it. So it leads me to believe its the pump

Newer cars do to pollution laws have to have a system that catch the evaporated gas. Some times the line gets gunk in It and doesn’t let air escape which tricks the gas filler to think its full so it cuts off. Trying puling the line to the evap canister off and blowing air through it to try and dislodge the gunk. Or your evap canistor is bad.

I had, well still have, a 95 Civic that would only let me put 9gals in an 11gal tank. And when it was over 3/4s of a tank it would flow back out of the filler tube if it idled for more than a couple of minutes! I could never figure out what the deal was. I tried cleaning out every hose I could find and nothing helped. Not the problem you're having but I feel your pain.

I didn't empty the tank, but it was low due not being able to put much fuel in. The filler neck attaches near the top of the tank, so nothing came out when I unhooked it.
