Yes. They shorten the pistons, possibly the housing, and re-thread the pistons to use a tacoma Inner Tie Rod instead of a tundra one, which is apparently much larger. They also mess with the seals and the valving pressure.

If you have a big lathe it's probably doable, but I have no issues with the 1500$ price.

 

Well, with all that I get it too. I don’t know if I could justify the price tag though when just replacing an OEM rack is so much cheaper.
I think if I had a long travel or anything larger than 35 I would be considering it more.

 

OEM rack is $350 or so. And a full day of pain and suffering to replace.

This rack is for people who never want to replace it again.

I think, and the guy at Solo agrees(for whatever that's worth) that solid mounted lower control arms are harder on the steering rack than not.

My rack, that I replaced in December of 16 is starting to fail again, and I'm on 33s.

 

out of curiosity, what are symptoms of a failing steering rack?

 

Loose steering, truck wanders side to side, leaking power steering fluid due to bad seals.

 

Wow. I replaced mine at + 160K with a junkyard one that had 70K - Need to swap inner TRE's on it now... I like the idea of once and done. Maybe if this one takes a shit on me I'll go that route.

 

What, oem rack for $350??? I have been quoted like 700+ from toyota...
I have heard good things from people running the rack CVJ offers (same cvj that many of us here used for ifs axles)
I have heard many many bad bad sad things though from eBay remans and other reman racks.

The way you wheel, you will be fine. Mall lots are easy on racks.

I did mine at 90K, with a junkyard rack that had 20K on it, and now at 105K it's going again. I expect I'll get to 115 before the wander gets too bvad and I have to replace it again.

 

That's for a lightly used one, toyota prices are insane for a new one.

 

I was going to say, no way it's $350. I got a brand new OEM for $560 for my first gen. Couldn't imagine a second gen being cheaper. That was with a hook up too.

hypothetically speaking...

$350 = used factory rack with 20k miles = 15-20k miles before it starts going out

$750 = new factory rack 0 miles = 90-200k miles before it starts going out


the killer is the install is a bitch of a days work for the average joe like myself

The only issue I have with modifying the truck to run a modified Tundra rack, is that when you are in far off places and you are in a pinch, you can’t throw on an off the shelf (Major AutoParts Chain) part to get you home. This would not work for me. There is definitely an advantage to keeping the truck stock as much as possible if you overland/wheel far from home.

If there is a bypass, take the bypass
