That would be nice; because, let's face it, we all still have a place in our hearts for the vehicles we used to own.

    Except that FJ Cruiser... :rofl::rofl::rofl:

Auto. Might not have been everything you were looking for, but was substantially less than the the prices you are listing.

Cheap, cheap plastic, which was Toyota's fault. Realizing I needed a truck, which was my fault.

I love my 3rd gen! Looks great with the scoop and the slick interior. Many will complain the transmission is shit, which it can be for sure especially after adding weight. Ive added OVTune's ECU and TCU calibration and now it drives like a dream even with all my gear. Sucks it would have to be tuned to drive right, but honestly now, with it all in place, its pretty effing stellar. Folks will always have their side on 2nd vs 3rd gen being their fav. Im squarely on the 3rd gen side. I still double and triple take my own truck and smile each time. Go find one that makes you do the same and regardless of the generation, i think you will love it!

Had a 2015 DCSB 4x4 SR5 Tx edition Auto trans that I traded for a 2016 Jeep Unlimited Rubicon that I again traded and ended up with a 2017 DCLB OR 4x4 Auto trans (only because manual isn't available with DCLB). Here's my $.02.
2nd gen was a better engine trans combo for driving comfort (smoother, more responsive)
3rd gen is better on fuel but feeling comfortable with the shifting/powerband takes time.
3rd gen wins the interior comfort/styling hands down
2nd gen didn't have the stupid auto braking traction control that sounds like the truck is coming apart. (same with crawl control which uses the auto braking system)
3rd gen has better lighting and a power sliding rear window
2nd gen will cost you less.
Aftermarket stuff is a wash because most of it is interchangeable between gens.

For primary or daily driver, I'd take the 3rd gen, for an off road or 2nd vehicle I'd do the 2nd gen.

Hey, I appreciate your input. I know about that one *fault* but it seems the 6MT guys dont have that issue so I'm not worrying about it. The diff whine is more my concern. 3rd gens are amazing looking trucks. And then modded like yours...

I guess well see when it comes to pull the trigger.

This is a solid analysis. My concern is that your faults against the 3rd gen are based on the AT not the MT.

There is an OVTune for the MT 3rd gens as well. It seems to be loved by those guys.

You would be correct, I was comparing AT to AT because I've never driven a MT in either. It could be a real gem but I can't speak on something I have no experience with.

Thats my plan. Super charge if 2nd gen, OVTune if 3rd.

The big diff being the gearing between the 2 in 3rd gen (other than the manual of course). AT is 3.9 and MT is 4.3 IIRC. I was also speaking in my statement about a TRD Sport without rear locker and all the techno crawl gadgetry.

I'll piggyback off of riz's transmission comment. It's been talked to death, but... I've been satisfied with mine.

    1. Yes, it is underpowered. Which makes it difficult to add weight/mods without affecting performance and mpgs.

    2. Accept it for what it is: It's a truck, not a sports car. It's also designed to favor MPGs over power. It doesn't have a lot of gettup. But acceptance will put you in a better, positive mindset.

    3. Drive with a light foot. Observe driving habits that maximize MPGs. Coast whenever possible. Drive it like a boat... a little throttle, then coast.

    4. The computer will learn. If you practice 3, you'd be surprised how much power is actually there when you need it. Eventually the computer adapts to you using relatively little throttle most of the time and adjusts accordingly. Then when you really put down the peddle, it sees a different behavior and will respond appropriately providing much more power as expected. But if you're always trying to race everywhere it'll accept that as the norm and there won't be anything left when you need it. (If that makes sense)

    5. Besides lack of power other common complaint is that the tranny is to eager to go to higher gears. Outside of the OV tune, you can always put it in manual mode. It'll still shift on its own but manual mode will limit how high its allowed to shift to. Helpful for when it's gear hunting at highway speed or when trying to accelerate onto the highway
