Hey at least you can blame it on the gas gauge being off, a lot of people don't have that excuse

    I use this method...
Trip A is for fuel, to find mpg
Trip B is Oil, to track oil change intervals. Try that maybe

Oh fuck that's smart. I'm going to use this in my subarus that don't have the 5,000 mile dummy light.

Stalling etc perhaps a result of running the injectors dry? No expert, someone else can chime in here.

Well, he said he had to have it jumped...I'd be checking the battery and alternator output, in addition to the fuel gauge issue...Unless, he was just cranking the heck out of it when it wouldn't start.

Kinda sounds like a cps (crank position sensor) to me

Very well could be, need to check for codes. And being this was "just" at the dealership, they may have left a harness partially disconnected and it worked it's way loose.
Willing to bet they caused the problem, and willing to bet they will deny it...

What? The OP said put 20 gallons in truck. It ran out of gas. Walks like a duck, his issues definitely related to that fact. Does running out of gas affect the crank position sensor? I dont think so.

Only an idiot if the idiot light came on and you still ran out. If your truck said you had gas when you didn’t, then blame the truck.

Hopefully you don’t have the ID-10t engine code.

I’m guessing that while you were out of gas and trying to get it to start it drained the battery enough to kill it. Hopefully you’ll be all set after a new battery.

I agree to an extent and that’s where he should start. But after gassing back up and running he was still losing power and intermittently dying. Unless he’s vapor locked or something he could be dealing with a problem unrelated to running out of gas. His battery being dead is probably because he was cranking it over a lot while out of fuel, so he could have air in the system too. Which might also describe the rough shaky feeling while driving.

my light came on this morning at 315 miles, then drove 2 miles to the gas station and pumped 16.8 gallons to a 21 gallon tank leaving 4.2 gallons remaining at an average of 17 miles a gallon, which in a perfect world would go 71.4 miles until death stall or 388.4 miles in total, but thats averaging 18.49 MPG

if you average 17 MPG you would dry up at 357 miles, so to be safe I wouldnt go much over 300 miles or 325 ever if your light/gauge isn't working

This happened to me last year. My truck had probably 145,000 miles on it at the time. Apparently the fuel gage got stuck a little under a quarter of a tank. Ran out of gas on an in-city interstate thankfully only about a quarter of a mile from a gas station. I don't trust the fuel gage any more (especially when low) and instead go by mileage mostly.
