I’ve never had to drop the tank, so I don’t really know where it’s situated, but my best guess is that the fuel pump/sending unit are all one piece that drop in and seal the access hole.

It would be hard to kill a fuel pump by running it dry, because if no fuel is getting to it, you’re not running. Most of them die from old age.

Put in a new fuel filter 1 week ago

Could i have killed it or done some damage from all my attempts to start it? My driveway is on a really slight hill. I have about 3.5 to 4 gallons in the tank. Thats enough that its not starving right?

I cant imagine its starving or it wouldnt have fired right up in the first place. I should probably pull the plugs back out again and see if one is clean and its missing

 

If you’re low on fuel and the fuel pump is thinking about going out, it could have something to do with it, might add 5-10 more gallons with gas cans and if it does the same thing that would rule out fuel pump in my mind, on the other hand if it is the fuel pump it’s an even bigger PITA to drop the tank with the extra fuel. Might try cleaning the mass airflow sensor really good, so that it’s not getting erroneous O2, inputs. Beyond that really hard to say anything without pulling some codes.

but yes, the non start and now rough idle issue were after the filter

 

He's got it installed correctly, but that fitting can leak if it isn't tightened well

 

I'm going to be coming to WY from the U.P. of MI in June (probably late June) to play tourist in Yellowstone. Unfortunately i'm not bringing my tacoma, but my sister just bought a new 4Runner and lives in Cody. Anything cool and mostly family oriented (wife, 2yo, & a 1 month old) you guys could point me towards for when we're there?

 

Would perhaps point to the new fuel filter being at fault, wouldn’t be the first time Napa or wherever sold a faulty new part.

 

i have not noticed any fuel leaking. ill check again when i try again

it could be. I dont have a pressure tester for a fuel line so i need to find a way to check that I have sufficient fuel pressure/flow

im going to run it again for a bit and pull the plugs to see if one is clean and or indicates a miss

I still sounds electrical to me. If it ran a 1600rpm, not likely a fuel problem.

Check your MAF and for vac leaks.

Nothing really in terms of offroading in yellowstone. Locked down tight, you'll understand when you get there and see the amount of people that go there.

The North Fork also doesn't have anything really as its a lot of private land blocking your from the public land until the USFS land but there just isn't that much there unless you area will to walk a LONG ways or ride a horse.

Yellowstone has tons of stuff in it that is family orientated. LOTS of great hikes for all levels.

Around Cooke City has some really cool stuff to check out just north of it in Lulu and Daisy pass. Also the Beartooth Highway is worth the drive and stopping at Mas taco in Red lodge would be great. Chief Joseph is still a great highway if you don't want to go that far north and Sun Light basin road is cool to check out.

 

Turning the key on won't make er squirt. Toyotas have to sense a crank signal before they fire the pump.

the 1600 rpms could have been the engine burining through all the gas that had flooded in from trying to start it the previous day(s)

check the maf for?? I mean i can just spray some cleaner on it. Ill look for vac leaks. tho same thing some thing woild have had to have been bumped and i dont know where to look or how to narrow that down

 

No it wouldn't have just run a 1600 if it was flooded and had some how magically preserve all that fuel. That just sounds like cold start high idle. My 95 and frankenstein both do a high idle cold start I'm sure yours does too.

It would ha e to have fuel pressure to maintain that rpm for more than 2-3 seconds.

Maf could be bad. But not super likely thougj not unlikely. If you have a code you need to get it read and cleared.

I'm assuming you've tried leaving the battery unconnected for longer than 15 minutes?
