Aftermarket Radio Install/Compatability

Hey, I know some of this has been discussed in bits and pieces else where, but I can't find any concrete answers...

I have a 2010 Tacoma Prerunner with a stock radio. I am not at all impressed with the radio, and I would like to replace it.

Does anybody know if there are any units available that would still function with the radio control buttons on the steering wheel? How about using the stock AUX input?

It's not completely necessary, but if the buttons don't work, it will seriously bother me to have them there.

Also, what mounting kit have people found to be the best?

There are head units that can be used with the steering wheel controls. It should say in the "specs/features" if they are compatible.

However, this requires a separate harness which runs around $60-80. Also, most of the new head units include an auxiliary input so

there's no need to keep the stock one.

Well, after 4 radios from toyota I finally got a Kenwood X794 / BT It fits great Audio Sensations Exton Pa. John did install great job. alpine speakers in doors /w tweets the speakers in back were not changed they are in head liner and are not good at all But I really dont need them. Best PART TOYOTA IS PAYING FOR RADIO AND INSTALL. I sprung for the speakers.I would give u some pics but for some reason my daughter thinks my camera is hers.

 

Just looked at it, it seems like a pretty cool radio. I imagine it would look pretty sharp in the dash. USB input is a huge plus for me... looks like it has an option for steering wheel controls. For 200 bucks, it sounds like an awesome deal.

I just added a Kenwood DNX6960

Steering wheel controls require an adapter to use them.

I also used to run that head unit through the JBL "upgrade" audio system. That required an adapter. However that only lasted a few weeks until I decided to ditch it and get a real amp, in addition to a sub box. Best thing I ever did with the truck. My advice - don't halfass it. Just go for it.

 

Man u are so right the radios in these trucks are bad i shoudud have changed it out months ago.

I installed my new radio today, the steering wheel controls were a little annoying, but I only took a couple of hours to get the job done.

This is what I used:

The radio is pretty awesome. It has a rear USB input, which I routed to the pocket below. It connects to my iPod touch, and controls it directly. It's really pretty cool. It even charges it.

I also bought a Scorsche wiring harness at Wal Mart for 8 bucks.

All said and done, it was 249 dollars. Including shipping.

There are two things I found annoying with the install. 1- The Scorsche DIM bracket is not textured like the old bracket (and the AC/Heat Controls.) 2- The steering wheel control interface has about a 1 second delay once you press the button on the steering wheel. It doesn't sound like a lot, but when you just briefly click a button, there is no response. You have to hold it for a fraction of a second, which usually results in overshooting your target volume or radio station.

Other reviews have had similar issues on Amazon... anybody know of a solution?

 

Has anyone installed an aftermarket radio that works with the factory installed sat. radio antenna?

 

Does anybody have any information about the wiring of the stock aux input? I really want to know which wires are what, so I can rig up a cable to use the stock aux jack for my new radio. I'm sure I could build a cable using radio shack bits and pieces, I just need to know which wires are what.

I have an aux input in the back of my new head unit, but I would really like to hook it up to the stock jack...

I just can't stand the idea of having something in my truck that has no functional purpose... know what I mean?

 

funny you should ask, i feel the same way!
i just updated my stock radio to a Pioneer 110bt head unit alpine amp and i all so updated the Speakers and sub, to get the steering wheel function all i had to do is buy a seprate part, the model to it is PAC SWI-PS this thing works very well with my unit

 

I wonder if you could disconnect the cables from the aux inside the stereo and splice them onto the stock ones. It'd be interesting to make it work but that deck is pricey(I bought one for my gf) so I wouldn't want to ruin it just yet.

 

I have the pioneer F-90BT. It has a good Nav, ipod, DVD, Bluetooth phone and works great with the PAC SWI.

Im planning on buying the Eclipse 5030 its single DIN, but hey I plan on adding a carputer later on anyways.

From what I have heard, Eclipses mount right in the Toyota stock harness as Toyota actually owns Eclipse's parent company.

Its a great headunit, FFUSB, BT support for phone and streaming audio, plus it has the 8v jacks and a real deal EQ.

They run about 200 bucks

Anyways, food for thought.
