just flash the 87 tune... it still has all the drivability improvements just not as much power gain. still worth it IMO... I'm still undecided if I'm going to do 87 or 91...

You could just elect to run the 87 map with 87 octane. Sure, you'll lose a touch of power, but I've tested both 87 and 91 and the loss isn't much at all. Plus, the increases to driver experience and drivability are the real value here. Do yourself a favor and pull the trigger lol

At $.20/gallon more for 91 vs 87 (it's typically less than that), that's $4.00 per tank more. If you fill up weekly, that's $4.00 per week. A lot of people piss away $4.00 a day on things they don't really need. For me, the cost difference isn't a factor. YMMV (literally!)

There are 2 octane options with this tune, 87 and 91. I flash 87 for that exact reason, not able to fill 91 octane while traveling.

Do you really care what the 0-60 time is on a Tacoma, are you racing it at the drag strip on weekends? The tune improves the drivability of this truck dramatically, especially with the latest 1.03 release, better low-end power and improved shifting.

If the stock truck feel sluggish to you, this tune is well worth the money.

Smiles per gallon. So much less stress over gas mileage when you just let it go and just fill up when you need to and don't care about the additional $4. Like you say, we piss that money away on dumb shit all the time anyway lol

I’ve run the 87 tune exclusively and I have zero complaints. Sure the 91 tune is probably better but I don’t see the need personally to goto 91.

Didn't Matt say something along the lines of that the truck would probably sense and respond to reduce knocking? I agree that you probably shouldn't do it, but if you do accidentally I thought I remember him saying it might not be an end of the world scenario.

yeah, for me the decision for 87 vs 91 is more am I going to be in areas that won't have 91. I know many times where I've hit places that only had 85 even... but it's been a couple years and I'm hoping that is becoming more and more rare. Also, my wife drives my truck, don't want her f'n it up on accident (looking at those stickers from Amazon)

Yeah I’ve been running 93 since before I was tuned but it is generally up to .80-1.00 more/gallon in many places vs 87. Been traveling for work all week so still have 1/2 tank of 93 to burn through and plan to try 87 again for the first time in like 9 months and see how it shakes out. I’m not opposed to saving $80/month if I can maintain the great drive ability!

Magnuson TVS1900 Supercharger with 87mm pulley, Catted OVTune dumptubes, Doug Thorley 2.5in y-pipe, custom mufflers, 76mm Tundra throttle body, 5.29 Yukon gears, JamesT custom fuel rails, Yotawerx 87mm tune, Eibach Pro Truck Stage 2 suspension. And some other stuff.
Driving with ECT on all the time I really don't mind the drivability. I actually plan on doing the ECT always on mod soon. My primary complaint is the lack of power at RPMs lower than 3500-4000. Seeing actual measurements of 0-60 times or 1/4 mile times, rather than relying on random butt dynos, would be very useful in making the decision.

In my area it is about $0.40/gallon. Which is $8.44/tank. Assuming I keep the truck till it has 150K more miles, the price of gas stays the same and I get around 17miles/gallon that is an extra $3,529 spent. Put the tune cost on top of that it is over $4k. Still not a lot of money but if you only gain (just a guess) 0.25 to 0.5 seconds in 0-60 speed I wonder if it is worth it.

It was very fun for sure. Ran it for 1.03 and 1.03B. For 1.03C I went to 87 because it's whatever. Got ver it, and I discovered that there's not too much of a power/acceleration difference. Negligible really. The main value of the tune is drivability and with my policy of smiles per gallon and keeping my revs higher up in the power band, it's not like there's a gas mileage difference in it for me to make the change to 87 more worth it. Just what I'm enjoying using

If you base whether or not the tune is worth it (excuse me if I'm misunderstanding you) off of the 0-60 time, then the Tacoma in general isn't the truck for you

It will pull timing, sure but not before knock occurs and what Mat also said is that precombustion at the compression ratio on these engines is bad juju... it will adapt but could cause engine damage, especially if you filled up and floored it with ECT on!

looking at the actual dyno numbers Matt has posted, you'll be getting a good boost mainly in the mid but also down low. you should see if anyone lives near ya is willing to give ya a ride or "race" ya.

if you're using ECT all the time, I would expect that you'd get a bit of a boost as far as MPG's go. I'm not really expecting much on that front considering I drive fairly conservatively with stints of spirited driving and average 18-20 in town and 23-24 on the highway (I sit at 65-70 on the highway and just chill in the right lane)

    Yep - and the 4.0 had (I think) a 10.0:1 ratio vs the 3.5s with a 11.8:1

Has anyone tried both the 87 & 91 tune yet?
