I am so literally tired of repeating this information year after year.

Clogged filters can't reduce flow. Imposibru.

I get it but why not get the filter located on the outside where you can maintain it? and as far as the pump goes...Better is better right?

Some of us need a refresher :D

I'm not saying that the filters can't clog. I guess what I'm confused on is what the EFFECT of this actually presents itself as? What are the symptoms? Like, I have 146k miles on mine. How do I know if it's time to replace it? My truck runs fine, how do I know prior to purchasing a fuel pump kit that I'm not just throwing away money?

Better is only better if it improves functionality. Otherwise it's a waste of money.

"Fine" is subjective. 30k and your filter is already thoroughly saturated with contaminants.

Search for all of those whom have replaced fuel pumps and filter. Hell. Search the threads I have started. Search for those whom have had to replace OEM pumps because their engine was pinging on '12+ models because the OEM pump wasn't supplying enough fuel.

"Fine" is when it is new. Tolerable is a downwards slope after that.

This is a :deadhorse: all foreign markets to America, have a replaceable external fuel filter.

Variable valve timing prevents catastrophic failure by reducing performance.

Do you change your air filter? A clogged filter can't cause reduced flow, right? o_O

Well I've read through about 10 of those thread (some that you've started too) and I've seen no mention of what performance improvements are post-filter and pump replacement. Seems like there are many whom have replaced it and seen a bunch of junk in the stock filter. That's great for piece of mind. But I'm wanting to know what improvements I'll see for my $165+ time investment. Is my fuel economy going to improve? If so, what should I expect? Better power? If so, what have others seem? Has anyone done before and after measurements?

I guess I just feel like this could be one of those mods that I spend money on and then later I think back and say, "Yeah, probably didn't need that."

I think that's the proper answer. VVTi just pulls timing. Makes sense. You'd think there would be a check engine light for something so serious as fuel starvation though. :(

I totally agree with your sentiment here. If we could just pull off the filter sock and add an inline filter with the confidence that the pump would be fine, I'd probably go that route.

It’s not the filter sock that is the issue. The actual filter is embedded into the fuel pump housing with no way to remove it with out hacking it up. See observations below:
    C0C3958C-1215-4394-9FFF-8E2ACB12B773.jpg 1BDB25D7-7384-4DA7-BF62-FB89FADD3F9E.jpg 5EF39758-2D34-471F-9325-4ECA2D9E5ACE.jpg
That cardboard like material is the “filter”

I'll likely be spending the $165 and taking some time to do this this summer. My 2012 turned 100K a couple weeks ago.

I know people who buy the parts themselves and save some $$ but if you go with the urd kit it comes with everything you need.

I've been going back and fourth on doing it too. I'm at 146k right now and on the stock one. I'm less concerned about saving a few pennies and more concerned with the time investment and the potential for getting it wrong. Is there a DIY? How long a project is it?

I already have unnecessary mods, what's one more....I don't believe this is one of those.
