That was in regards to making CVT's shittier because people don't like the 'Feel' of them. Programing the feeling of shifting gears completely negates the reason to have a CVT.

It might seem like the hyphen's in the wrong place there, but it isn't. The automaker claims its new CVT is unlike any other, because it uses an actual set of gears for launching, followed by more traditional operation under all other circumstances.

With the forces from launching sent through that gear, Toyota shrank the belt and pulley components of this new CVT since they don't need to handle those stresses, which means it can swap gear ratios 20 percent faster. The result is a CVT that Toyota claims is 6 percent more fuel efficient than its current one.

You do know that the tacoma is pushing like 800 lb ft of torque @ 3k RPM on first gear right?

Imagine the amount of torque being pushed through a Cummins 6.7 in first gear.

Edit: And the torque you feel is the electric motors helping it on take off and acceleration.

    +1 lol
sorry I'm a fan of how well their engines are put together and engineered. That being said, I've never had the need for one.

So its a hybrid transmission? In other words. Best of both worlds.

Agree completely as my wife just bought a 17 civic hatch and that things drives buttery smooth and really moves when you want it to.

Had a Nissan Rogue as a rental for a week. Don't you find it loud and kind of underpowered? It also seemed to rubber band with noise/rpm.

Although my wife's 2015 Honda CRV Touring has a CVT and it is absolutely seamless. You almost forget that it has a CVT. As someone else said earlier... the CVT does take a little more maintenance though. The SUV is at 70000 km now and I try to do it every 35000 kms.

The article is really more about Toyota's drivetrain improvements including their updated CVT technology. They already use CVT's in many models and it is likely that these new models will replace them in future models that move over to the TNGA architecture.

Toyota has had CVT's for about 20 years in Japan, less in other markets, but they have been in North America since about 2013. This excludes their hybrid transmissions which have CVT action, but are a completely different design.

Could have bought one without the CVT, back in 2015 a lot Corollas didn't have the CVT yet; unless you wanted a more loaded model, then you were stuck. Still, the Tacoma is a good choice. ;)

The Sienna has never had a CVT, they're all traditional automatic transmissions.

I wouldn't expect to see them in any trucks any time soon either, they're for lighter duty operation for sure.

Like I was saying previously, the Hybrid Synergy Drive (HSD) transmissions are a very different beast compared to most other CVT's, and so while the feeling/operation while driving is similar, they have actual mechanical gears that provide the ratio adjustment (also simultaneously combining input torque from the two electric motors with the gas engine). They seem to hold up quite well.

I’ve had two CVT cars. Pass. I prefer the newer 8-10 speed transmissions. I’m not sure why everyone is hung up on the fuel efficiency aspect. CVTs are not all that great IRL at increasing mileage.

On the Lancer I owned when I was 20 the manual and twin clutch manual/auto both yielded better mileage in testing over the CVT. One limit of CVT is the actual gear ratios that can be replicated. Often in order to achieve some oversrive gearing companies will have their CVTs has a very high first gear ratio. That’s not great for start-stop driving.

CVT tech is not as bad as it used to be.

I am excited to see Toyotas rendition on it. The Synergy hybrid system is in the top of the hybrid systems, and was one of the first designed. Would be excited to test it out!

Maybe, but the initial cost of $5-15k more for the Electric Truck might hurt the wallet.....

Sienna doesn't have a CVT. We have had a number of them and non have had a CVT ever. Since 2017 they have a had an 8 speed transmission in them.
