    Pretty much.

Although, the warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship, and this is definitely a case of defective workmanship

Nope that is not the whine. Your truck is fine. Quit reading these threads or your truck will have every symptom lol.
You will know it if you have it.

Update: i've put some miles on since the TSB. I drive with the radio volume normally around 18. I can't hear (don't notice) the whine I once had under normal driving. I say normal driving as i can get it to do it when feathering the throttle. Even then, it not as loud and happens for a shorter duration so it's not as noticeable. The volume is about the same as the tire noise or wind noise. Feathering the throttle like this is not real world driving to me so I would assume no one would notice it if they didn't already know about the whine.

The part is a dynamic damper, so by nature, it will attenuate the resonance, not get rid of it completely. A shock absorber is a damper for your springs, you hit a bump, you feel it but it doesn't keep rocking up and down. When you feather the throttle (for me, 57mph), you hit the resonant frequency of the body mount (could also be sheet metal inside the cab near the mount) and it sings. By feather the throttle, you keep pinging the resonant frequency consequently before the damper can do its job, a shock absorber analogy would be rumble strips.

What's the rules for voting? Do I switch my Yes to a No now?

That describes how mine has been from the get-go. From my perspective, it's more of a whimper than a howl. I voted 'no.'

Had the TSB done yesterday. I would say mine is about 75% better. So in my case it went from "everyone can hear it" to "only I will probably notice" going forward.

Just got mine back from the dealer. 75-80% better but mine was very, very, loud. The octave has dropped and is no longer ear splitting.
Very true although I can still hear it it is so much better especially since I can not hear it over the radio at low volume now.

So this is a resonance issue or gearing? I mean it seems like most of the sound has been reduced or muffled from dappening and putting sound reducing material behind the cab.

Seems like most people report the sound is still there, just more quiet.

It's resonance, which is what it's always been about. Sure, the rear diff gearing is the source, but only because at a certain rpm and a certain torque ( lightly feathering throttle) it sets up a frequency that is transmitted to the rear leaf springa and cab mount. The actual sound you hear is coming from a resonance between the diff housing and rear spring. Not the actual ring gear and pinion. Did you read the TSB?

    Tsb, shmee-s-b....

The whole rear end is going to grenade and we all know it....we have a lot of time invested in predicting it......so you’re not going to talk us off the ledge that easy.

Now I have bone to pick with Cummins as well...you should hear the fucking racket mine makes at idle, acceleration, cruising, etc. Bastards better dampen that mother down or I’m gonna gripe about it on TDR!

I read the new TSB. I glanced through it, guess I missed the rear differential vibration. you're explanation makes sense.

in fact just re-read it again.

fluent in sarcasm. I get it.. you want credit for your theory hypothesis which ended up panning out like you said.

Don't mean to open up another can of worms, the shop which you had work done, hasn't exactly been named. if your invoices and diagnosis with parts where posted long ago there wouldn't be as many " theories" floating around. I can understand their respect for privacy. But why release your findings in such a cloak and dagger way??

this ordeal would have been settled long ago.

What the hell are you talking about? Did you read any of these posts? It wasn’t my theory, it was hiPSIs. I have repeatedly given him credit for talking me off the ledge via PM.

I had my gears swapped....do you want the manufacturer of the 4.88s I went with? I went with the Nitro 4.88s with the front/rear crush sleeve, eliminators, solid spacers and shims.....The kit ran about $1,400.00 and included the new seals and pinion nuts. Do you seriously want me to post my receipt for my gear install and parts?

As for the parts...there was no wear, tear, damage or any issues with stock gears. Would a recording of the shop foreman walking me through it mollify you? Hell, I even snuck out the three parts of the name of the shop in one post. People in my area will know exactly who they are. I’ve even given the name to people in PMs who are swapping out their gears, but there is no way I’m throwing out their name in this sort of thread....no way no how.

Go get the TSB done. If you still can’t stomach the noise, sell the blasted truck.

If you still want to cling to your belief that the rear end in these things is a grenade, find an independent shop and have them check it out.

You’ve spent a lot of time and energy almost exclusively posting about this specific issue in primarily this thread. Nearly every post I’ve seen with your name on it is a swipe at the truck. Our little truck before the Tacoma was a Colorado. It was a piece of shit, but I sure as hell didn’t waste my time spamming it on the Colorado/Canyon forums. Out of respect for the members I shared what I could with the issues I was having and moved on.

Are you seriously blaming me for the multitude of theories in this thread....namely because I didn’t provide the name of the shop that did my gear work or any other specifics?

    Piss up a rope.

Since you have the longbed, as what I read with owners with longbed reporting howling noise has been resolved with the new tsb, yours will also be resolved hopefully. There's nothing to loose. Go ahead and have the tsb done.

I've been following this thread for some time, even asked a question or two alone the way. Curiosity now makes me ask if anyone can identify just what springs are being used to replace the OEM spring? The TSB provides the new P/Ns, but what series of Toyota vehicles were they destined for originally?
    Thanks
