Colt and BCM for starters. If your location is correct, then colt is your best bet for a reliable CA-compliant rifle in the $800-1000 range. Also, greetings from a former east bay/tri-valley resident. I grew up in San Ramon/Danville.

How’s it going neighbor! Lol I’m in the process of building my first AR. Just ordered a BCM upper. Was going to go with a aero precision but they are out of stock. Building it is fun but I think it worked out to be more expensive

I really liked my Diamondback DB15. It was a solid starter rifle.

I got 1 just this week. Looks solid, and ate everything so far. The trigger sux, entry level tho. I will upgrade the trigger soon. Put a RDS on it, 1st one I've ever had. No likey. scope coming up.
Edit: It's an Oracle flat top, no iron sights,

In some ways its more expensive than stock depending on the stuff you order, but its cheaper then buying a stock upper or lower and then buying the parts to replace the stock stuff you dont like.

They might be very inexpensive..but super reliable. My buddy has one and he uses his AR more than any person that I ever known. He has a 6,000 acre farm/ranch near the border. So needless to say, he brings it along everywhere he goes and uses it everyday to shoot hogs. Its filthy with that fine farming dirt, and it has never had an issue.

The optic would be suitable, but you may need different rings. Most AR/Optic combos require the use of High mount rings. As for Craigslist, it's buyer beware. Meet in public areas, inspect the product well. Not everything is a scam, not everything is legit... o_O

The .458 SOCOM is awesome, feels like your shooting 12ga. Definitely get the 458 specific upper receiver and there are a couple companies that sell bolt/barrel combos for it if you want to assemble your own upper. Though the Ammo is stupid expensive, like $2-$4 a pop.

Consequently, I don't shoot mine very much... :spending:

I have a colt but dont really notice a difference other that it shoots everything I put through it now. They are a little proud of their name and their prices reflect that. Bushmaster and RockRiver Arms are also good quality. As with anything there are 100 different companies and 100 different preferences...;) well maybe not that many but you get the idea...

M&P15 Sport II is my current starter rifle recommendation if the primary purpose is plinking/range/Defense. If the primary purpose is hunting, I’d recommend a different flattop setup for optics. $600-$700 range.
