No price yet, but going by normal cars vs. their electric counterpart, it is in the ballpark.

About 1/3 the cost of a Tesla is wrapped up in the battery. For something that can give you even respectable mileage you're looking at least 60kw that will probably get just over 100 miles in a stock tacoma.

Continuously variable transmission, I think they basically have 2 drums with a belt thus giving infinite ratios.

I will have to ask our dealership. Our salesman said that it did have a CVT. There is no dipstick or way to check fluids and I was told the dealership would have to do that. It is a 2014 model. I also remember him telling us that it was belt driven now and I was concerned about the belts wearing out.

    Pros:
No shifting (if there is it's artificial)
    Always in powerband
    Efficiency(mpg)
    Less moving parts(less weight)

    Cons:
Can not handle too much power
    Less reliability
If it breaks it will result in catastrophic failure.
It will slip as the belt wears out. The belt is actually put together from hundreds of little links.
Monotone exhaust note if no artificial shifts are programed.

Once it goes out it's more cost effective to buy a new one as most shops will not rebuild. (Anecdotal).

Life expectancy is 100,000 k and a new one is around 5k USD

Our Subaru Forester has a CVT trans and it's excellent Wouldn't want it in an off-road vehicle though.

I see you have a newer 2015+ OB. Does the owner's manual still recommend not towing up a hill if ambient temps are over 104°F with the CVT?

Seems like more cons than anything, think I'll hold on to my manual for as long as possible! Thank you for the information, very well put.

TBH I wouldn't mind a high clearance vehicle with a per-tire electric motor and an onboard genset, but that's me. Don't need lockers or transmissions, and onboard genset means plenty of power for extended overlanding...

It was a 2016. Traded it in for the Tacoma when we upgraded to a travel trailer. I don’t remember what it said in the manual. I remember it saying if the trans light comes on to putt over and let it cool.

1/3 the cost? Of which Tesla? There are Teslas that start at $35,000 and Teslas that go for over $135,000. That's a difference of $11,666 to $45,000.
Where does Tesla report the cost of the vehicle construction per part?
How did you come up with KwH numbers for a Tacoma?

The future should be Diesel dammit. Why are we encouraging the hybrid/cvt hype.

They don’t publish official figures, and only quote replacement costs for actual customers. The batteries are different between models also. The roughly 1/3 concept is a number that’s thrown around by Tesla enthusiasts and has been the accepted figure for some time. This puts a 100kw model S pack at about 32k and a 40kw model 3 pack at 12k. Which is fairly comparable and scales reasonably well. Range is purely speculative and will depend on speed and figures the drag coefficient of the model 3 at 0.21 and Tacoma at 0.38. I suspect that on the freeway the Tacoma’s areo would kill freeway range. Electric cars are very sensitive drag.

    Hi all,

New to the site here. I had a 2014 Nissan Pathfinder (competitor to the Toyota Highlander). It had a CVT along with a 5k towing rating. Well, there is now a class action lawsuit because of the insufficient design and capability of that CVT. There are folks out there on their 3rd and 4th units at this point. Anything other than a snowmodile or a Corolla I would be very skeptical as to CVT capabilities. They simply cannot handle much in the way of torque. I replaced that Pathfinder with a '17 Highlander with a regular slushbox, and wow, what a difference!! No issues at all. Incidentally, I will be replacing my CVT Corolla sometime in the near future with a Tacoma TRD. To the point of this article, if they consider changing anything from the Highlander on up to CVT, run far and fast. Rav4 is prob fine, but otherwise no way.

I had a loaner CH-R for a week and I wasn't a fan of the CVT. If they went dual clutch now we're talking a good auto transmission.
