Hey guys! I have a 2017 4x4 sport in a 6 speed manual. I’ve had it for about a month now and I love it. But anyway, I was off-roading the other day and was on 4 low. After going through sand and mud for about 3 minutes, there was a burning smell a burning smell. Any of you experienced that and might know what it is? Thanks!

Just a guess, but you might be smelling the brakes, the traction control works by using the brakes to control wheelspin.

I'm guessing it was the clutch, even the best manual drivers will burn the clutch from time to time when offroading, especially in sand.

You probably smoked the clutch a little. I did that the first time offroading and my mistake I was running 4HI too :frusty:

This happens when you want to feather the clutch to be smoother. I figured out the best way to drive in 1st gear when offroad is to actually drop the clutch. Use the E brake if you need to slow the truck down.

Accept it as an inevitability. But truly you can reduce it by just thinking a few steps ahead. Sometimes you make a mistake and need to slip it just a little more than you want to. Transiting from an auto jeep to this manual tacoma really makes a difference, I get out to check the trail more, I utilize 4lo WAY more than I use to for just better ratios. Its just finding better habits.

Whats that burning smell burning smell Jim.... Just life offroad as we know it!

Use 2nd gear more than first unless in mud or sand. Can start out in 2nd too. 1st gear gets you out of trouble. There's that trac off button too... look up - it's beside your sunglasses holder, that will take care of the brake smell.

I figured I would revive this thread instead of making a new one.

I was driving on the beach earlier (I have an automatic transmission) in 4hi. After about 2-3 minutes I started to hear a screeching noise and smell burning rubber. I’ve never encountered it before or since then. The sand was pretty deep and the tires were spinning pretty good for a decent portion of the drive.

The smell/sound stopped immediately once I got back onto pavement and switched out of 4hi. I checked the truck afterwards pretty throughly and can’t find anything wrong with it. I’ve driven several hundred miles since then and zero issues.

Anyone have any idea what it was? Maybe just the tires burning up on the sand?

That’s a good point, hadn’t thought about that. Maybe a piece of wood or something similar that I picked up driving out there.
