Yep. If you're into cars this is one of the worst states to live in.

People get around it though. I had a friend with an E30 running straight out of the headers which is incredibly illegal. You know how he passed SMOG? He told me he walked into the shadiest looking SMOG shop in Oakland's Chinatown and slipped them an exta $20.

I just wish they'd known about that motor vehicles would be invented when they drafted the Constitution!

The emissions system gets complicated though, you'd have to run tons of vacuum lines. In 2001 Toyota moved the charcoal canister under the bed accompanied by 3 or 4 vacuum lines.

That's how it works around here, too...

At least in Pennsylvania, emissions testing and registration aren't tied together! I met a guy who's late 1980s Chevy 1500 wouldn't pass inspection due to the exhaust, and as of 2016, he'd been driving around with inspection stickers that expired in 2011! He'd never been pulled over...

    In California, it definitely isn't...

But I don't like DUI checkpoints...

I think roving patrols are a far more effective approach...

Really? I have never encountered one or seen one. On the flip side I saw them everywhere in Jackson, MS.

DUI checkpoints are supposedly "unconstitutional" in your state...

They seem to be more common in SoCal...

I had the misfortune of encountering a DUI checkpoint on my way from work on St. Patrick's Day last year (I work at a bar, so I was probably the only person on the road that night coming home from a bar who had any business behind the wheel). A 12-minute drive home turned into a 40-minute nightmare...

All that time in line just so a cop could ask if me if I'd been drinking (which I hadn't)...

Now, I go on a website called DUIblock.com to make sure there are no DUI checkpoints on my usual route before I drive home...

They still have DUI laws in Texas and come down hard on drunk drivers, but supposedly the police actually drive around looking for people showing signs of being drunk, instead of shutting down an entire stretch of road in both directions and pissing off a whole community...

And I've been hit by a drunk driver before!

    I'm all about efficiency...

Don't piss off everyone in town (Which amounts to easily thousands of cars) just to get maybe 50 drunks off the road...

Those are European Union plates. Import driver's like to buy them and put them on their car so it appears to be imported when really it was built in the United States.

A majority of US sold BMW's are manufactured in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

I think Toyota started manufacturing our trucks in Texas to circumvent the BS chicken tax...

The Tacoma has always been manufactured in the United States starting at NUMMI in Fremont, CA in 1995. When NUMMI shut down in 2010 operations moved to San Antonio and Tijuana.

My Tacoma was actually manufactured down the street from the dealership it was purchased from. It's a whole 3 blocks away at the Fremont Toyota. They must've drove it straight off the production line to the lot. The old NUMMI Plant is Tesla now.

When we were living in Virginia, I saw a right-hand drive Mercedes van with Virginia plates driving on the Fairfax County Parkway...

The license plate mounts were clearly for Euro plates... There was a white woman driving it, so I'm guessing she was the wife of a British diplomat or something? I think because of Fairfax County's close proximity to DC, authorities looked the other way when foreign VIPs brought technically illegal euro-spec vehicles into the state...

I believe the 4Runner is one of Toyota's only USDM production cars still made in Japan.
