Out of curiosity, when did rear lockers start becoming available in off road editions? 1st gen, second? How about in general? When did lockers start becoming a “thing” in an option on 4x4s?

Not 100% positive of the exact year, but I have seen numerous 1st gens have the option. That narrows it down a little.

So it’s always been an added extra off road option

You are right and wrong. True, I sometimes confuse my Taco with my Rubicon, probably because I bought and ordered them at the same time and sometimes mix their innards up and this auto-LSD thing. However, you are actually wrong, the TJ Rubicon:

It is fact that the rear TJR 44 has both the Torsen LSD and an air activated locker from the factory at least in 2003-2006. On my Taco I do seem to recall that the Locker deleted the LSD now that it comes up, funny how things get stuck in our heads.

I believe it was 97 for the Tacoma and 96 for the 4runner. The LC I believe had front and rear lockers in 92 ?

Yea I just meant for Tacoma’s, but that’s cool about your Jeep. I had no idea that was something offered for any vehicle.
