Make sure you’re in nuetral when you transition to/from 4Lo. I’m not sure about 3rd gens but 2nd gens you can go to 4Hi on the fly at low speeds. But all in all stop, put in neutral then switch to 4Lo. Put back in drive and roll until it shows 4x4 is engaged

    You gotta start somewhere! Welcome!

You should go into 4HI first, (solid 4x4 light) then go to 4LO....Not straight from 2WD to 4LO.....

Every now and then I’ll get a clunk when taking it out of 4wd. It won’t hurt anything it’s a Toyota. If you put it up on a hoist and looked at the size of the transfer case and 4wd components on these trucks you would see they are built very well. Hope that alleviates any of your concerns sometimes things just clunk.

Always use neutral, not park. Takes any pressure off the deiveline. If it doesnt shift in to or out of low...place the dial back to where it was, drive a little way, put back in neutral and try again. NEVER, drive with it trying to shift and beeping. Sometimes takes a few times for everything to mesh.

ALL 4X4 vehicles can at times be difficult to get out of 4lo. Don't try to go straight from 4lo to 2hi. You are asking the transfer case to do 2 things at once. Stop, place in neutral and shift to 4hi. If if doesn't shift out of 4lo within a couple of seconds shift back to 4lo, then go to reverse and back up 10-15 ft, then move back forward 10-15' and try again. Depending on how hard you've been using it you may have to do this dance several times to get it back to 4hi. Once in 4hi place the truck in gear and drive off. Once moving then go to 2hi.
