It’s dynamic problem solving with a time limit shooting small targets.

I have a couple of rifles for long range use. One is a Springfield M1A Loaded. The other is an AR 6.5 Grendel that I built. The Grendel is good out to 1125 yards, my furthest shot.DSC07721.jpg DSC09547.jpg DSC_0361.jpg

    Welcome to the club!
A nice mix of the old and new. Is that a vortex scope on your 6.5. It’s a little hard to make out.

Hardly true long-range, but for a .223 400 yards can be a stretch. Doing some ammo testing here to figure out a good factory load. Hoping to take it out to 600, the longest range available here here in old kommiefornia Jr AKA Illinois.

Long range shooting is any shooting you have to “dope in” order to hit your target and that is definitely considered long range

Use heavy bullets 75-90 grain preferably match profile.

I've had fliers on all my 70+ gr loads, go figure 69gr SMKs are best thus far. Gotta clean and try again, I've got some Hornady Superformance Match that needs testing.

    Edit: removing hungover thus fars.

Yes, it's a Viper HS-T 6-24x50. The scope mount in the picture is a Burris PEPR, but I've since switched to a Warne 20 MOA elevated mount. My first time out at long range, I ran out of scope elevation adjustment (for crosshairs on target) at 850 yards, and was using all the reticle holdover by 1125. The Warne gives me another 20 MOA of elevation adjustment. My rounds at 1125 were going transonic, the computed ballistics show them going subsonic at 1250 yds. I shoot the Grendel with a few guys who are shooting .308's. My 123 grain SMK's have a bit less drop than their heavy 178's at that range, but we're both going subsonic within 50 yards of each other. I'm loading AA brass, 30.1 grains CFE-223 and WSR primers behind 123 grain Hornady AMAX,or 123gr. SMK's. The SMK is more expensive, but shoots a tad flatter. I use a Geissele HSNM DMR two-stage trigger.

I haven't shot the M1A past 400 yards, but it's scary tight at that range. The scope on it is a Millett 6-26x58mm. on a Fulton DMR mount

NICE intel! Ya, they start to get a little unpredictably when they get to that state, any little influence, and there moving off of math, I run a Burris XTR on a 20 rail also and have had to still go to glass to make a shot

Imo shooting a 223 4-600 yards is more fun than shooting a "long range calliber" only 4-600 yards.

My savage loves 75gr hornady black bthp, i like it because they are relatively cheap. I didnt shoot any paper but at 500 yds i was hitting a 5" diamond every time

Depends on the twist rate of the rifling
One in 8 works best with wide variety of bullet weights.
I run an 18” 1-8 on my DMR, loading 75gr Hornady match running 2800fps
I would also suggest “stop cleaning the barrel” leave it fouled

Ruger precision rifle chambered in .308. I’ve had a lot of luck with federal SMK and hornady ELD Match. It’s a great rifle and can out shoot my capabilities. It was about $1100 and since then I’ve made some upgrades. And there’s more to come. I bought it specifically for long range precision shooting and competitions. I highly recommend a bolt action instead of semi auto for competitive shooting.

It was such a hard choice for me between the 6.5 and the .308. The 6.5 creedmore was better in every way except availability and price per round at the time that I bought it. So that’s what got me. In hindsight, should’ve gone 6.5. But I’ve had a ton of fun so far
