Rigid Ignite Install

So I got my Ignite lights installed today. I went with the diffused ones.

Pretty simple. I cut a template out of both the light itself and the flush mount piece from the thick paper stock that the lights had inside the box.

Lined things up on the back side to make sure that there would be room and then used an awl to poke through the center.

Once I had that hole, I drilled out the hole with a bit from my hole saw setup. I used the bit to go through the center of the template and outline where the lights would go.

Here's the outline:



I used the hole to measure several spots and then get it in nearly the same spot on the right side, drilled a hole and outlined there as well:



Next, I used a 1 1/2" hole saw (install says 1 3/4" but that's technically a bit large though it would work just fine).



That left me with this:



I then used a dremel to trim the rest to size and make sure the light fit. I know someone else made this smaller and wedged the light in and didn't use the bolts on the cover of the flush mount piece. I wouldn't recommend that as they could still come out (well possibly move, just held by the wings so didn't seem good to me) . So I drilled holes for the bolts and installed them.

With where I put them, I also had to dremel away a portion of the backing piece that is behind this bumper part. Not a big deal. The bolt wasn't long enough and I didn't want to try to find matching ones that were longer so I just did that.

I recently installed ditch lights and used the 3-panel switch plate that replaces the cubby. While I had that open, I wired up all three switches that I put in there and brought the wires into the engine bay. There is one left for when I get a roof rack and light bar.

Can you take a pic of your radio with it in reverse? To see if by chance there is a change in the viewing due to the extra brightness put out by the lights.

 

I will try to do that. I have upgraded reverse lights too so I can do one with the Ignites on and one off.

It looks like it's worse with the Rigid's, but as soon as they come on, the LCD gets completely readjusted light wise. If you look at the license plate lights you can see they look TONS brighter in the reverse only light image vs. the ones with the Rigid. So this doesn't really show the light output well.

I don't necessarily intend to use them for reversing except when off road. They are also more for lighting up camping areas without being ridiculously obnoxious.

Did they come with all the necessary wiring and relays?

 

Nope. They come with a length of wire attached. You need to run all the rest. I just got a generic wiring harness, used relays that I already had and some wire loom and lots of extreme temp zip ties.

 

So glad I found this! I am actually planning on doing this - never heard of the ignite until this post, and they seem to be a much better solution than what i had in mind. What did you find to be the best route for the wiring?

Grab the rigid backup harness. It’s worth the cost. Comes on automatically in reverse, and can switch it manually as well. On/off/auto.

 

Not to change the subject, but where did you get that hole saw arbor?

 

Also - does that FJ Cruiser switch fit in the caliraised panel? If so, where did you source that?

 

On our trucks the passenger side is easier to route along the truck because you don't have to deal with the gas tank. But I've already ran other stuff over there too so I ended up routing up the driver side. It doesn't really matter. Use high temp zip ties and plenty of them to keep things tight.

Uhm...I don't have an FJ Cruiser switch so I'm not sure what you mean? And I also don't have anything from Caliraised so I wouldn't know even if I did.

Good post Odin, almost identical to my install of 2 rigid ignites, except I wired mine into the factory back up lights, they are definitely very bright for their size, it'd be difficult for someone behind you to say they didn't see you were backing up.

 

I think I looked at yours. I wanted to be able to use them while in park for camping and such - unloading gear in the dark.

 

I installed these last night, and something weird is going on. When the truck is running, the lights work great (I have them wired through my switch pro).

But when the truck is off, I can turn them on (setting on switchpro), and after about 10 seconds or so... they start flashing. I pulled them off hte switchpro and hardwired them to the battery, and same thing. after 10 seconds... flashing.

Before installing, I chatted with a Rigid rep, and asked about wiring in series or parallel, and was told it doesn't matter. So I wired them up in series. Is this why they are flashing? why after 10 seconds or so? I'm stumped.
