Ask for the compression test results(actual numbers from each cylinder, not just ¨it was good/bad¨), a print out of faults with fault duration if available, and some pics of radiator and spark plugs with plugs labeled from which cylinder they came from. Also, documentation of technicians true diagnosis, not just it sounded horrible. If you are about to drop 9k in repairs they should be happy to provide this info. If not, retrieve your vehicle and take it elsewhere. Keep us posted, I really want to see those numbers.

I agree with everything you said daddy_o, but would also add a leak-down test after they do the compression test to gauge the health of the engine.

I was going to add that, but I wanted to see the compression results first. But, yes, a leak-down test is always completed after compression test in my shop.

The warranty should be 3 years or 36k miles. Dealing with the dealership is tough because all of these issues need to be run up the corporate flag pole before the mechanics can really even tear it apart to find the real issue. Plus why wouldn't they throw out a number to see if you will bite. They are business and want to make money (agreed a shitty thing to do) even though it may be a warranty issue. All you can do, if you don't like one dealers answer goto another one if you can.
Open up a case with Toyota corporate and you can email Jim lentz in corporate

They haven't seen it yet. Filed the claim on Wednesday. Not sure if they can do anything but wanted to get them involved since they actually hold the title.

My first truck was a 92 pickup. That thing was bulletproof, 22re with LCE headers and a short throw shifter, full magnaflow and geared down. I'm sure its still running to this day

If your engine got hot enough to be damaged beyond repair it should have gone into limp mode and it would have been so hot you would have seen alot of steam and should have been able to smell anti freeze. As far as the hole in the back of the radiator being caused by an object off the road I have seen some wierder things happen. If that engine ain't smoking or skipping I don't think it needs replacing. I would fix the radiator first and see if it still runs hot .

If you overheated enough to seize pistons or warp a head, you would be blowing steam out like a steam engine. I'd get a 2nd opinion.

If the truck drove fine to the dealer with no signs of loss of power then I would say the dealer is full of it. This is why I hate dealerships. When I worked at a automotive shop, I couldn't tell you how many times a customer said the dealer told them the engine needed to be replaced and 9 times out of 10 it was a small repair.

The hubris of some people in this thread! To expect the dealer or Toyota to pay for anything outside the warranty is just unethical. They'll pay for it inside the warranty period - outside the warranty period they won't even if it's a from-the-factory occult defect. How hard is that? These are the terms we agreed to when we bought the vehicles.

Considering they'll usually try to weasel out of any maintenance under warranty I wouldn't frame it this way. Also a warranty is a legal guarantee. It is the bare minimum that must be honored by the manufacturer. If you're a company that cares about providing a high level of service and satisfaction you'll take these kinds of situations seriously and take care of your customers even outside of warranty.

Or you can get sued, and Toyota knows a lot about that.

Won't help your case that you expressly agreed Toyota has no responsibility after the warranty period. The bar will be very high for you to prove otherwise.

Again, you are missing the point. There is a difference between what you have to do and what you should do.

Not how it works. The rusty frame lawsuit didn't give a care about warranty. You don't just get to wipe your hands of your product the day the warranty runs outs.
