What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

I want to rebuild my 5VZ - is it absolutely necessary to machine the block or will replacing all the seals, gaskets, pistons, and piston rings will suffice?

450k on the drivetrain but everything works fine.

 

the least you can do is honing, but i'd recommend replace all seals, gaskets, piston rings,main bearings, rod bearings. theres alot to it then what most people think also get some plasti-gauge to see what your tolerances are so you can get the correct bearings and piston rings

 

I don't know if I want to sink too much money into machining costs that's the thing

 

you can do the hoaning yourself its easy. just need the honer and a drill

 

What would a machine shop do exactly if I brought them a block and told them to machine it?

 

typically bore it out. in example make a 3.4L to a 3.5L might be a little extreme but you get the idea.

while honing removes burrs or glazing. heres what the type of honer i use

Question:

When I put my truck in 4WD I get a repetitive clunk noise until I push the gas, kinda hard to explain.
Check the ujoints on the front drive shaft and they don’t have any play and it sounds like it’s coming from right under me.

Even though my description is brief anyone have any ideas?

 

if it comes from directly beneath you that sounds like the transfer case. i would start there, change the fluid and see if theres any metal in the oil. but thats just me

 

What's the advantage of having a shop hone the pistons versus doing it yourself?

 

Wouldn’t that make a grinding noise? When I spin the drive shaft there’s no binding or anything stopping it from spinning normally

 

its a better quality of a job.

more then likely but if ujoints dont have play then to my understanding that would be the next step. but it could be a number of things.

 

Finally got my scan guage II installed, found a perfect clean spot under the radio pocket

 

What sensors are those?

 

Ive been wanting one of those. What all can the scanguage show?

 

A ton of stuff, toooo much stuff, you have to go to the website,
A bunch of different window options to,

 

Boost, tranny temp and AFR are all I'm really worried about. Anything else is icing on the cake

I just went shook around again with 4wd on. Pretty sure it’s the joint right in front of the transfer case.

It’s gonna have to wait a day or 2 cause I’ve played mechanic waaaay to much this week.
