King C/O Frustration

    I'm so annoyed and disappointed right now, mostly disappointed.
    I bought a set of King 2.5's w/ ext res from Wheeler's Offroad not to long ago and finally got around too installing them. I was stoked and excited on the quality and did plenty of research before dropping 3K total on my suspension. Go to install and decided I wanted to adjust the ride height before bolting them on. Used a Branick spring compressor and removed the tension. Back the lock bolt out 1 turn and commenced to screwing the collar down. No issues on either side at all. Once complete, I tightened the lock bolt back and installed them. Checked, double checked and triple checked everything was torqued and the lock bolt was tight. Lower the truck and everything looks good. Take a quick test drive down a dirt road to aid in settling the suspension and I notice the front left drops. Limp it home and discover the lock the collar jumped the threads and completely bottomed out. Remove said C/O, place into Branick and discover the collar to be jammed on the shock body itself and seized.

    Should I go back through Wheeler's or go direct with King on this. I'm so frustrated right now I'm cross eyed. I haven't heard of this being a common issue and I know I check those damn bolts. In fact it was still tight when I took the C/O back out.

    Man that sucks, I would start with wheelers, see if they can take care of you. First give them the option to remedy it.............If not I am sure King will square it away.

    Also can you post pic? Someone on here may have had the issue and able to provide a solution..........

    I’ll try to take picture after work tomorrow. I plan on giving wheeler’s a shout in the morning. Luckily I’m not down a vehicle as I hadn’t sold my 6112’s yet.

    Ya I’m more than pleased with rear 2.5’s. Maybe I got one that slipped through the cracks? Who knows. Just hoping I don’t have to drop another 1,400 for some fronts.

    You have a Branick compressor?? Do you have a professional shop? That's like a $750 tool.

    I'd be curious to hear how this gets handled.

    I don’t personally. Really good relationship with a nearby Firestone that does with an ASE Mechanic certified on it. I was in the bay with him during the adjustments and assisted.

    And they're worth every penny. As soon as I have a garage I'll be purchasing one. They pay for themselves quick.

    Using that type of tool is about the only way to safely adjust coilovers with a pinch bolt. That should go in your favor.

    Forgot to mention that the reservoir line on the main shock loosened during the initial drive and was weeping the whole time. Tried to tighten it, but didn’t stop the leaking. I don’t know if they rushed these things out due to the high demand and their QA/QC took dive. I also know they were out at King of the Hammers when mine were shipping from the factory. Either way, hopefully this thing pans out and it was just fluke. I don’t want this to be a bash on King thread. The other 3 shocks are phenomenal.

    Sounds like the pinch bolt got loosened up too much and the main threads weren't engaged properly on the shock. Then when everything was tightened down and installed the first bump jarred it loose. Shitty experience, isn't the nut aluminum? Might just need to remove and replace the nut and clean up the threads on the shock body.

    I loosened it one full turn and tightened it back a full turn and a half. It cranked down quite a bit. There was a small amount of resistance when I was dialing the collar down leading me to believe they were still in line. I didn’t observe any metal shavings until it jumped the threads. Plus I’m sure the shock has no fluid in it by now due to the leak I couldn’t get to stop.

    According too the guys on the split ring thread,you didnt loosen/tighten the ring properly.

    There are only two likely scenarios. Either the adjuster rings were not properly machined to begin with, or the pinch bolt was not properly tightened. Neither are the OP's fault. It is either a QC problem, or a design problem.
