Fox shocks

thinking of going with fox over bilstein anybody running this set up? If so what’re your thoughts on it

 

If you got the money, go for it. Ride quality is amazing on kings and fox (friends have em on their truck). I will be getting TRD Pro 2nd gen kit which are essentially Bilstein 6112/5160 which is pretty good and most people who only have rode on factory shocks before would think you have a hi-end suspension, but if I had a bigger budget, would have definitely gotten Fox or Kings.

 

Im thinking of going this route over the 6112/5160 set up, i want a nice on road ride while still having decent performance off road

 

For "decent", I think fox is a little overkill. The 6112/5160 is firmer and more forgiving compared to stocks on and offroad. Especially going from a TRD sport to 6112/5160, it is a world of difference.

Fox of course will surpass that. If you are not planning to go MOAB, baja, or etc, I don't think you would need Fox.

 

You'll have to forgive my ignorance, ive done alot of research but still feel like i know nothing...

are fox shocks adjustable like the 6112's? my main concern with the 6112 is that if i try to get two inches up front with too high of a clip setting my on road performance will suffer and be too stiff.

 

Yes they are adjustable, however you would have to take it apart to adjust them. On top of that, they are not rebuild able (from what others have said), but a 6112 is. The 6112 is known for going 1"-3" so you would be fine however the Fox lvl 2 is maxed out at 2" so it would be stiffer on the road.

 

Oh, forgot to mention, if you are doing suspension that will do any kind of lift to the taco, I recommend replacing the needle bearing in the front diff. You can search up ECGS bushing and everyone will recommend it since the needle bearing are guaranteed to fail, just depends on when. Some reported the very next day others a few years down the road. The ECGS bushing is only $60, if you plan to do it yourself, you would have to buy the special tools for it which is $$$

 

I was thinking of doing 5100's all around with 887 coils instead of the 6112's so the shock had all of its travel in hopes to combat a stiff on road ride

5100 is great if you don't plan to offroad heavily. 6112 is a bit upgrade when it comes to offroad handling.

ECGS is the company/brand if you didn't know.

 

Do not do this. It will ride awful, i had 5100's w/ OME 885 coils on my tacoma and it was brutal. Go with fox, icon, king, radflo, etc and be done with if it's in your budget. You'll also need UCA's to get your alignment right. Don't buy the suspension if you can't afford UCA's. I now have radflo's and it was the best money spent on my truck.

 

Can you explain this? I'm going from a TRD Sport to the 6112/5100. Will it be a firmer stiffer ride? Or softer?

 

I’m running that exact set up on my 2015 I like it a lot! For sure stiffened up the ride all around over stock. The factory suspension was awful off road. I am running total chaos upper control arms up front and in the rear I have the allpro u bolt flip kit wheelers super bumps and allpro expo leaf pack.

As a side not I’m not much of a rock crawler or a desert racer I like to camp and mostly find myself driving fire roads that lead to less traveled fire roads pretty bumpy and lots of washboard roads here in Az.

 

He won't need UCA's if he is only lifting for less than 2"

 

On road will be firmer on handling, but when it goes over things it'll be softer compared to stocks. Basically if you corner hard or brake hard your nose won't dive like the TRD OR stocks do, but when you are offroad and hit a hole or go thru ribs/multiple small bumps, it'll be softer.

No, he'll need them to make the truck drive right. It may be "in spec" but it'll drive funky and not as well as it could/should. Also those fox coilovers are preset at 2", not maxed out at 2" of lift.

 

Did you have the 3rd gen? Cause I am pretty sure the 3rd gen is already 1" higher which is why it's maxed out at 2" OF ADDITIONAL LIFT. Sorry I didn't clarify. I could be wrong though.

I never knew that. I have never adjusted mine up cause I could never found out what they were set too. Always thought a lot of threads were showing so I left it be didn’t want to preload it too much. Now maybe I’ll turn mine up a little
