If it's running fine why mess with it? Do a compression test and see what you have. The million mile tundra still had maximum compression when they tested it.

I don't plan on keeping the 450k truck I'm going to be rebuilding, restoring, and eventually sell it. Thought it would add value plus it's good practice for if I eventually do it on my own engine.

That thing's not worth enough to justify restoring it. You'll never get your money back. Clean it up and enjoy what you've got.

Seconded, if it runs good right now it won't run appreciably better after you've done your first ever engine refresh. Even if you got it machinist perfect, chances are the things robbing power are old spark plugs, bad or dirty injectors, and sensors that aren't reading quite right anymore.

Don't get excited. It wasn't an MKIV. It was an 87 MKIII turbo hard top with a 7mgte motor.

Was still cool. I'd like to buy it back. Sold it the owner of a toyota dealership. He just rebuilt it to stock aside from the forged internals I sold him with the car.

Not a lot photos of it.

    and so much this.

Just drive it and beat on it.

Mines like 1/4”, I only put mine in to fix vibration though.
I messed around with 3/8” washers to figure out how big of a spacer I need. So you could just do that.

Went to Cancun for 5 Days, took 3 hours to catch up on this thread.

While there I couldn’t resist snapping a picture of this fugly Hilux:
    EDF4EBE9-9155-4CB5-96D7-D18CC09CF3A3.jpg

Got home today and saw a puddle under the truck. Crawled under and saw red fluid drips. Coolant. Followed it all the way up to the upper radiator hose. I already cleaned up the cover but there was coolant on it right under the hose, you can see the run down. I guess I’ll try to jam it on further and tighten the clamp. I reused the old clamp, maybe I’ll replace it.

At this point I don't really care about making a profit on it as long as I break even. This is just something fun for me to do.

Same here. Mine was a little over 200 regularly. Changed hoses, radiator and thermostat. Thermostat was installed upside down. Stays at 190 or less now.

Still pretty interesting to see. What a cool looking engine.

Yeah the 7m is a nice motor. Had a factory fuck up on the HG and so long as you kept the oil over filled you were good. Not quite a robust as 2jz by any means but still very overlooked.

Yeah, I'd still just leave it alone, it's 100% not worth tearing into if it runs good. You'd likely spend quite a bit making no real difference. Maybe refresh a motor that's not in a functioning vehicle, or tear into this one and build it for a big turbo or something. My point is don't rebuild a good motor that doesn't need a rebuild unless you're building it stronger for something.

Too many trucks and mods to list.. check builds
if your not keeping it its not worth rebuilding it if it still runs. My corolla only has 6% cylinder leakage with almost 700k on it.. i dont plan on rebuilding it till i needs it... (it could use a new timing chain though.. it sounds bad lol)

Yeah you're right. Least I can do is the water pump or head gaskets or something.

I gotta do something on this truck. Damn you Toyota for making such a reliable truck!

I picked the wrong car to restore. There's nothing broken. Lol.

I really picked it up to restore it. Not really to make a profit or anything - thought it would be nice to learn how to rebuild an engine or practice some body work.

It's great for practice for when my daily driver eventually needs that work.
