Debating on switching to 2018 TRD OR 4Runner? Any thoughts?

Owned a 15 Taco, Currently own a 16 T4R SR5 Premium 4x4, and a 18 Tundra Crewmax 4x4. I can hands down say the T4R kicks the taco square in the nuts. The overall fit and finish is hands down well above. The driving characteristics are well above the Taco too. Buy a pedal commander for the T4R and the damn thing will feel like a little rocketship. I cant say enough positive things about the T4R.

More room in the cab? Geez! that thing is a palace on wheels. Who in the world would need that much room?

4runners are awesome, OP. I had a 2010 Trail model and a 2015 Limited prior to my Tacoma. Both were excellent vehicles, fit and finish was better than my 2nd gen or current 3rd gen Tacoma. Definitely a better vehicle to carry passengers in, and both were really comfortable. You do give up cargo room but you know that. How much do you use your truck bed? A trailer may be an option if you need one (I rented from U-Haul 2 times, not an issue for me)

I'm back in a Tacoma because I love having a truck and the bed is easier for me to get work gear into and out of. It all came down to preference. I will say the '10 Trail 4runner is one I'll always think back on fondly. Really capable, looked awesome and I loved driving it. Would probably still have it but life got in the way at the time.

Test drove a 4R OR Premium a couple a weeks ago.The 4R fit, finish and build quality is superior to the Tacoma. 4R is a much better value and is still 100% made in Japan. Corporate got greedy with the Tacoma and it shows.

Every time I see a T4R OR, they’re Msrp is more than a pro. Just get a pro.

But with this fit and finish BS.... with the little baby touch screen, dated cluster, lack of options and the old 4.0... what the hell are you talking about lol. With that being said, my brother is selling his 2018 smurfpro with a toytec 2.5 inch lift.

I agree the tech feels a bit dated, but I always feel that way about Toyota/Lexus tech packages. For me, the finish on the 4runners is just tighter. Less rattles, squeaks, etc. It also just felt like better build quality to me. Not bashing the Tacoma, just my objective opinion.

you are correct. Everything is put together a lot better. You can tell pride was actually put into the product, not a union worker only caring about when his next break is.

The 4Runner is nice. As long as you are not going to tow anything. The tow rating is a deal breaker for me as we tow a travel trailer that weighs 4,300 dry. When we were trading in our 16 Tacoma for a new vehicle, I gave the spouse the option of getting a 4Runner and a smaller trailer. Would not even consider it. Even if we did not have a trailer, we would probably still have a Tacoma. Maybe the next gen will be more appealing. The current model is tired.

I had a 2010 Taco and a 2013 4R. I found the 4R to be unstable in extreme crosswinds at interstate speeds (80 MPH in the West). I'm talking like 40-50 MPH winds, not garden variety breezes. The 4R would sway hard into the next lane. When a truck was in the next lane, that was terrifying. Where I live, in the US Southwest, extreme crosswinds are a fact of life much of the year. The Taco with its lower profile, without a cap, was much more stable. I have a 2018 DCSB OR manual on order. I also like the new tech available on the Taco but not the 4R. And, the bed is great to throw dirty mountain bikes in. Also, I did much better on resale trading my old Taco than my old 4R. That might just be my experience though?

I drove an 07 T4R for 5 years coming off of a full sized Doge Ram. I really liked the T4R but I traded it for a 2012 Tacoma because I missed having a truck in the family. Good news was I got way more in trade in value out of the 4Runner than I excepted. I can't remember the exact numbers but it was something like only 25% depreciation of the 5 years and I negotiated pretty hard on the OTD price of the 2012 Taco.

I'm on my second Tacoma now with a 2018 recently purchased. I wouldn't hesitate to get back into a 4Runner but don't want to give up my beloved truck and there's no way I could have both since my just got a 2018 Avalon that she absolutely loves.

Missing My Last Tacoma --- Had 11 Toyota trucks in the past and many other Toyota cars too.
I’m thinking about going to a T4R again too.

Last one I had was a 1999 and I loved it

IIRC, the T4R is still a “J Car” and has higher QC.

A manual Taco can be had. But, not a 4R.

2017 DC SB 4x4 Limited - Traded for 2018 4Runner TRD OR Premium w/ KDSS
I owned a 2017 Tacoma Limited double cab 4x4 for 1 year. I just recently traded it for a 2018 4runner TRD ORP w/ KDSS because I just hated the way it drove with the ECU "learning" and overall gimp performance. The KDSS option makes a huge difference in handling and perhaps helps with the crosswind per the complaint above because I haven't noticed any problems with it.
Things I miss from the Tacoma: JBL stereo with bigger screen, keyless entry and push button start, blind spot monitor
Things I like better in the 4runner: Much better rear seat space, solid feel to it (build quality?), handling, softex leather, head room, power seats, it doesn't have that horrible transmission/engine combination, seems to have less interior blind spots.

And most importantly, the 4runner is just fun to drive

As a bonus, the 4R still comes ( at least for now) with the proven, bullet proof reliable 4.0L and we get 21 mpg combined, not bad.

And while I do like the 3.5L in our taco because it gets better mpg than on the previous 2nd gen, it's loaded with high dollar tech that could cost me high $$ when I clock 150k on the odo after the warranty is over.

But I'll worry about crossing that bridge when I get there

    Me two!

I agree on the benefits of KDSS. My 4Runner had it. It didn't help in the crosswinds for me though. But, again, these were not 25 MPH or so crosswinds, which themselves are strong winds. In NM, we get hit with frequent 40-50+ MPH winds and gusts. Especially in the Spring. Those winds will test anything.

The 4Runner is definitely a nice ride. My wife has a 2017 4Runner Limited and we both love it. It has most of the features of my Tacoma, though you can tell it’s an older design. It does have cooled seats, which I have become very fond of. The engine and transmission are simple, but very smooth. There is definitely more room in the second row seats. It’s surprisingly roomy for passengers. I would be perfectly happy with a 4Runner, but we do use the truck bed and tow stuff with the taco. OP, if you like your taco, but need interior space more than the truck bed, the 4Runner is the perfect compromise.
