Which would be the preferred one to start with?

Me and a buddy who just purchased a 17 Tacoma TrdPro are planning on going to the Black Hills this summer. I have a 15 Trd Sport DCLB with Duratracs on it so far, otherwise ALL stock. I want to be able to keep up with him when it gets tricky. Plus it would be nice to have being in Iowa with crappy winters. Neither of us are going to be getting into anything too wild, we are absolutely anal about our vehicles. But we aren't afraid to push them a little either.

My thoughts are that a TrueTrac in the rear will get me a lot further than 2" of lift. But what do you guys think?

BTW - I would love an ARB locker or something like that, but for the price one ARB and supporting gear I could put TrueTracs front and rear and still money left over. My wife drives the truck in bad weather, so I want something that works without having to think about it.

Agreed.. he won't be much taller than you in his pro and having a locking diff is a better idea for that just in case moment.

TrueTrac is next on my list after sliders. They come highly recommended.

Since you'll have 2 vehicles I'd recommend skids, sliders, and recovery gear.

Go to the Black Hills and find out if you have more issues with wheel spin or dragging skids then you'll know if you should go truetrac or lift first.

I had one installed in my Nissan Titan 2x4 before that my truck would get stuck in a mud puddle. Then I had a trutrac put in and even on wet rainy roads I noticed a huge improvement. It however isnt a fix for snow country;) But I would install one again if I had to.

My vote is trutrac, what good is clearance without traction? may not be able to go as fast but the same places. These trucks are pretty surprising stock.

It looks like everyone is recommending what I was thinking. haha. Thank you very much guys!

We have plenty of recovery gear between the two of use, minus a winch. I do want to get full length sliders as well, but we'll see how the budget goes. We plan on not getting too crazy, but I know we might get into situations we won't anticipate. A bunch of us have done a good bit of trail and single track on dirt bikes up there, hopefully we don't run into that kind of bolder type terrain. haha

I completely agree! I was just hoping for confirmation from other users. haha I'm a little indecisive sometimes. Who knows, I might just go crazy and do front and rear truetracs....

Haha, I never planned on it stopping. :) There is a lot I want to do, but being it is a daily driver and I don't have the funds (or credit card bills haha) some of the guys on this forum do I have to keep it mild. lol
