Thanks guys, and that really does look like a longer bed. In order to fit the bike in my bed with that extender, the extender would need to have an angle in the vertical portion...not a 90 degree as the rear wheel would interfere.

For those looking for the tailgate weight limit...Fwiw I bought the OEM bed extender and it specifically said not to exceed 200lbs on the tailgate That said, instructions were for the 2005+ Tacoma and didn't give a different rating for the 3rd gen tailgate if it is indeed stronger.

So I am seeing a lot of street bikes and dirt bikes I have a crusier and I want to take it halfway across the country with me when I go home on leave. I really don't want to buy/rent a trailer its 6 and a half feet from the center of the front tire to center of the rear tire it also weighs more at 630ish pounds is there any way you guys can see this happening any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The only thing I can think of right now is putting it in diagonally... Then that amount of weight on the tailgate becomes a factor for my heavier bike...

6'6'' to the centers means you got about two more feet in length. At least, might be close to 9 feet over all. That would be tough to properly tie down in a long bed let alone a sb. Too long use trailer. Uhaul mc trailers are cheap

A major trip like that you could pick up a sheet of 3/4 plywood, cut it to fit width of bed and build some wheel blocks to keep stuff from shifting. Plywood would help take the weight of your 600 lb plus bike on the tailgate.

It's 94 inches overall so in theory, the plywood might now be a bad idea.

Is it a Long Bed OR or Short bed? You can see my bike which is 84" long in my SB with plywood in post #27 of this thread.

It's a short bed but I think me and some of the guys at work came up with a really good solution. I'm gonna take 2 2"x12"x8' pressure treated and sandwich them together with screws and construction adhesive and put 2"x4" tire chocks and strap it down to the front with eyelets. Then just put my bike on it and strap the bike down with like 4 straps should be pretty solid will for sure hold the weight. What is y'alls opinion on this idea? The good bad and the ugly and trust me I don't care if you call me stupid or give me some constructive criticism I am not a flower or cupcake... LOL

AND... If this all works out well and goes as planned I'll be sure to post pictures so hopefully, this helps out anyone else trying to figure out the same problem.

Put the rear of the bike in the front of the bed too if you can as that will also help take weight off the tailgate.

I wouldn't, best tie down points are the bars and the bike suspension flexes with braking.

The 3rd gen tailgate is way more stout then gen 2 tailgate. No problem driving with the bike from San Francisco to Los Angeles. Put about 1000 miles on this trip.

Reviving an older thread, but did you walk or ride the bike into the bed up a ramp? I'm not concerned about the weight of the bike while loaded, but more so when loading. I've never loaded a bike, and I'd be doing it solo. Pushing 500lb or so wet with a Triumph Street Cup and I'm about 200lb myself.

I use a dirt bike trailer that mounts to the trailer hitch, it works great!

Any of you guys think I'm pushing the tailgate limits on a 700 mile trip with both a KLR650 and a XR650L? They are heavy, tall dual sport bikes and I'm just worried about tailgate and bed limits. Here are a few pics of the KLR in my truck so you can see the overhang onto the tailgate.

The KLR weights ~430lb and the XR weighs ~350lb and with a ramp I'd round up to ~800lb in the bed. Not sure how much weight would be on the tailgate, but the KLR is halfway onto the tailgate with a 58.3in wheelbase and the XR wheelbase is 1in shorter at 57.3in.
