Kinda not related to anything recent but I was wondering what your thoughts were on jumping from 265s to 255s. Also what suspension changes did you have to make to fit the 255s? And finally I just picked up a shell and planning on throwing some front runner racks up there and a rtt on the shell. Its a 100r like yours and I was wondering how its held up so far?

 

A 255 is more narrow than a 265- nothing needs to be done to make the change. A 255 is a centimeter skinnier than a 265.

 

Last airbag question! I was going to add the extra leaf to my dakars. Any reason to do this if I think I'm going to add the air bags? Once my high clearance brute force bumper with swing out arrives we will have almost identical setups from a weight perspective.

Obviously down travel isn't affected since the air bag isn't attached on the bottom. As one side travels down the other travels up. Do the airbags have any trouble compressing when filled to the desired psi?

 

Honestly if I had to start all over I’d probably just use stock leaves with air bags. I see no need to do the aal if your getting bags, they will support way more than any aal.

 

Interesting...thanks. I know you guys have discussed articulation several times and said there were no negative affects. Based off that I'm going to assume that the bags will compress enough to let the opposite tire drop? I keep thinking that would be an issue, but I'm sure it isn't.

 

Yea your limit for up travel is the psi of the bags. Down travel doesn’t change if you use the cradles. Basically if your in a situation that requires your max suspension travel your most likely gonna air down your tires to something lower then highway pressure. Just do the same with your bags aswell. Results may vary so this is just an example, you’d have to mess around with your setup to find the sweet spot. But for the sake of argument you run 35 in your tires on the highway and 35 in your bags, you’d set your tires to 17-18 for off-road. I’d use that as a baseline for the bags aswell and adjust as needed.

 

No issues personally. As potato described you can mess around looking for the sweet spot. Unless the trip or terrain in gnarly I keep my street setting offroad. This was a very cold day over the winter and last set the bags were 20psi, not sure if the temps adjusted that just technically saying. It’s not the craziest flex and my suspension isn’t maxed out but you can see the one bag compress and the other extend..





Next time offroad I’ll try to get better pics with a shot of the bag at ride height.

 

Thanks guys. I think I'm going the bag route and will skip the aal. I'll check and see if I can get the bags and cradles off Amazon tonight.

Anyone have any fabric rips, tares, holes that need fixing? Decided to get some pics and write a positive review on some repair tape after being happy with the fix. I started to get some small tears and eventually holes in my awning, figured it was getting old and didn’t pay any mind to any cause of the damage. I wanted to get around to fixing it cuz it was getting worse.. Ordered this Gear Aid fabric repair tape on Amazon, says it can repair jackets, tents, sleeping bags etc.. and bonds to a variety of material. Even tho it says no heat needed I warmed up the tape and fabric with a heat gun right before adhearing it. I did an inside and outside patch. In a few minutes when it was completely cooled it seemed super solid and looked like it will hold up over time nicely.

While doing the repair I realized what’s causing this..
While on the beach a few years ago a gust of wind flipped the awning up over the truck. I ordered a couple parts from ARB including two new telescoping post. Never realizing at install the one mounting screw for each side needed to be inwards.. one side was in and the side tearing the fabric was out. With trail vibrations the screw head was eating away at the fabric. All fixed now and lesson learned.




While fixing the awning I figured I’d address the zipper. I lost the pull piece on one of the zippers so I replaced it with a key ring. Worked good and thought about cutting the other off and adding a second key ring.. before that the first key ring had already rusted. I scratched that idea and just used paracord. Very pleased with that fix as well. I remember reading @2012Taco build and he added heat shrink tubing to his zipper pulls to eliminate them clanging together.. this solves that as well.

Being a beach buggy isn’t all beach picture glam. Had a lot of corrosion on my blue sea, battery, and isolator for the winch. Been procrastinating on it till my rear switches stopped working. I had some time to take a look yesterday and found my electrical terminals were disintegrated. So time to address everything.. @Wheelspinner recommended a battery terminal cleaning spray and a terminal protectant. Toothbrushed everything with the cleaner and coated with the protectant. We’ll see how this holds up. Also come along way from my wiring a few years ago so felt better upgrading the terminals. While into it fixed my under hood lights running a new led strip and cleaning the pressure switch.
