I read somewhere on this forum that Toyota motor oil is made by Exxon-Mobil, but I'm not sure if that's the case. I know Exxon-Mobil makes the oil for GM and Honda, so I wouldn't be surprised if they made Toyota's oil too. BTW, Welcome to TW.

Mobil 1 is good but definitely not the best, Royal Purple or Amsoil.

Is it ok to switch from half synthetic oil (Valvaline durablend) to a full synthetic motor oil like Mobile 1 after running the first for 50,000 miles (changes every 5k)?
I remember hearing something that you shouldn't change between types of oil cause it can cause problems. Is this true or was I hearing someone incorrectly?

I am using Penzoil Platinum for my 2009. Is it the best...I have no freaking idea. Does it work well...I hope so.

QUESTION for you...is it bad to switch brands for each oil change? I use full-synthetic no matter what but sometimes Mobile1 is on sale and sometimes Penz Plat is on sale. Can I switch or should I stay with the same brand name?

I generally use Mobil 1 because it's actually not all that expensive anymore but I've used Penzoil a couple of times when it was on sale and even some "Dino" oil once or twice when I needed a change and didn't want to drive 50 miles to get synthetic.

Of course, this is with a newer engine. I have heard that it's not a good idea to change brands after you have a hundred thousand miles or so on an engine because there is the risk that a different additive composition might break lose deposits that can plug up passages in the the oil path. For the same reason, you don't ever want to use motor flush on an old engine.

Think with your dipstick, ok, no comment, just Ha

Oils have to pass tests, the bottles say it on them.
The weight is a bigger concern.
Make sure to stick to the proper weight recommended.
0w20 for winter, light duty and fuel mileage
5w20 for heavier duty and summer

Synthetics nowadays, are much better than they used to be, although in the US, much less stringent than in the UK. US synthetics would be considered semi synthetic in the UK, from what I have been told.

That said, synthetics break down slower, and are more of a molecular consistency than conventional oils.

Brand, I run with whatever passes the tests the best and are on sale, but if I were to choose, I would take Mobil1 or Penzoil first.

I caught my dealer using garbage, and the wrong weight.

They put in 5w30 and claimed that southeast toyota approved it, while I pointed the service manager out what the owners manual said about the weights of oils used and warranty, yada, yada

    Again, I say caution.

There are no problems switching brands between changes. SM oils are so good, buy what's on sale and use it with no worries.

But DO try to keep to oil type: synthetic or mineral oil. And use an appropriate OCI for the type of oil you're using.

Motor oil gets dirty, and that's when it's time to change it.

I believe that the oil change interval should be determined by how dusty or wet are the conditions where you drive. Also, under really heavy use (lots of cold weather starts, short trips, hard driving, towing/hauling big loads) combustion byproducts pollute the oil more than normal.

Now the Toyota V6 is a really clean engine IMO, so the challenge is to keep it clean, and that means that oil you might not consider too dirty in my '61 Scout, WOULD be too dirty in my Toyota.

Problem is knowing when it's truely dirty because appearance offers no clues. Look at a diesel's oil in the first 300 miles and it's already turning opaque black. Motor oil is meant to carry the 'dirt', it's a good sign.

Does anyone know what oil weight Toyota specifies for the Taco V6 in summer? I went through the owners manual and could not find it.

I use dino oil (conventional, not synthetic) in my older cars that never tasted it before. Whatever 10W40 brand name is on sale. I use only Mobil 1 Synthetic 0W40 in my newest BMW. I plan to put Mobil 1 in my Taco, changed every 6k miles. I guess the dealer will be doing the 1st oil change (after 5k).
