Hey guys, I have a question for those of you that have removed the back panel in your 3rd Gen access cab down to bare metal. I haven't purchased my truck yet (still trying to locate a deal) but when I do, I already have some modifications drawn out that I would like to implement.

I want a truck that has the utility package but I want to modify the access cab for additional storage. Like many of you I will be building a raised floor for the access cab that allows storage on top and underneath. However the key to my plan is removing the back panel down to the bare metal and in its place mounting a 1/2 inch sheet of ply. From this sheet I will be able to build additional storage components, add hooks to hang bags off of etc. and add a few inches of depth to the cab for storage.

My concern comes from looking at pictures of stripped cabs - I want to mount a sheet of ply to cover the entire back panel of the cab and I want it to sit perpendicular to the floor. The problem is in looking at pics of the 3rd gens I can't really tell if there is enough metal/mounting points to mount the board and if it will allow for the board to stand vertically.

If at all possible, I want to be able to snap the original panel back in place if I ever plan to sell the truck. Can this be done or should I just build the unit to go around and over the existing panel? Would I even be saving that much space by doing this?

Take a look at Molle Panel Group Buy, a panel like this might help... https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...-2nd-3rd-gen-dc-or-ac-rear-seat.410254/unread
You could probably do similar with plywood rather than aluminum.

It’s definitely a lot easier to just get that panel and be done.
