Im running stock (tune on order) and Ive had this surge since owning the truck. As mentioned earlier, if I've left it outside then pull into the garage I have to keep a close watch on the brake, same in reverse. I mentioned this to the dealer and they said it's normal but they get the concern.

I also have the brief stall with full throttle from a dead stop.

OK, cool, sounds like just one of those little quirky 3rd gen issues some of us have. Yeah, if it the same thing as what I have stock, it's definitely manageable.

I am curious how many of you guys experience this if you are cold starting and then begin your drive very shortly after (like 30 seconds / 1 minute) So I can do some testing.

as far as quirks of the truck, there are many.
I posted about them when I picked up my truck for R&D.
here are the things that I have personally seen happen on stock tune

    1. idle rpm bouncing between 500-1000 rpm at random times
    2. billowing smoke out of the exhaust so bad that I thought the head gasket was blown. during a drive, NOT cold engine. Lasted for about 1-2 miles. Thick white smoke
    3. idle shaking, entire truck shakes
    4. RPM flare (rpm will jump up to about 1100 rpm) when shifting from park to D without being completely warm. (this is due to different idle targets depending if the truck is in park or drive)
    5. an clunk from the rear of the truck. Seems to come around on very cold days
    6. S mode inability to upshift past 4th gear. I actually made a video about this but didn't post it (or did I cannot remember)

I’ve had zero issues with cold start and surges. Over the past week I’ve been starting the truck having sat overnight outside with outside temps between 32 - 41 and drive right off without issue. Granted I have not tried reverse in a cold start.

Have always had some cold temp cold engine idle surge - stock tune and 1.03 - have not noticed any significant difference better/worse with 1.03 verses stock.

Only notice it in reverse at idle.

I get a slight bog if intake off immediately after start up but that did that on stock tune as well. I have never had any stuttering, surging at any rpm range since flashing. I am 16 6MT with 04b11 ECU

I’ve had all those except the white smoke came from my tires!

I’m getting random rpm surges with the truck in D at lights or in stop and go traffic. Probably 300 to 500 rpm. But they are so random the only way to catch it would be to strap a go pro to my chest.

Could data logging this with tech steam help u Matt?

Also experiencing the surge in reverse but it only happens in conjunction with turning the steering wheel. Stock tune did this but it's more pronounced with 1.03 (I'm running 87 octane) and when the engine is cold.

It’s crazy how every truck has its own quirks. Props to you Mat for trying to sort this nonsense out.

lets not fill this up with email notifications about shipping notifications. Lets keep it on topic and discuss the tune and let ovtune not have to sort through 1000 post of bs before getting to good info.

I have experienced the surge from day 1 of owning my truck. I just keep my foot firmly on the brake when I shift from P to D in the AM. Also for the record, it happened to me during the test drive at the dealer. I think it's just a normal characteristic of these trucks.

I get the odd surges as well when in R and sometimes in D - generally the ones I see in D are when I am slowing down and making a turn or something and it can jump a little bit at times and given the extra power it can be a bit more pronounced. I tried to do some video tonight but of course I couldn’t reproduce it until the moment I stopped videoing! Mine doesn’t sound as pronounced as some though - thus far I’d just put it in the quirk category. When pulling into my garage I would initially get spooked by the throttle tip in but now I just get up enough speed pulling up my driveway so that I can coast with foot ready on the brake. Otherwise seems to be learning its targets and working well - I am even adjusting to the tip-in a bit more. I LOVE being able to turn against heavy traffic and KNOW my truck will ALWAYS go - and never once have I had it hesitate in any way since on 1.03 and 700 miles in I can’t tell any measurable difference in how it shifts from when I first flashed it.

Glad these things are being looked at to put the finishing touches on a pretty perfect tune otherwise - shifting, power, and linear throttle with a smooth idle (aside from the random surge) and cleaner exhaust are here to stay though!
