Tacoma Travel Trailer Towng: Read If You Consider Buying An RV

Both of mine have been stock double cabs w/TRD Offroad pkg. The 12 is running 265/75/16 KO2's but no mods other than a Baja Rack and a platform from the hitch forward that allows me to carry a large cooler, genset and Scepter fuel can inside the bed.

My Scamp is stock as well but you'll want to find one with at least a 2" axle lift if you go that route (many of the later models will have that as Scamp has offered it as an factory option the last few years). Your mounting position won't change but I can't speak to the towing characteristics. I've got OME springs and shocks on my Wrangler and it tows a little better than stock (but most anything would have been an improvement).

 

Anyone with a gen 3 (2016+) that has monitored the transmission temps (pan and torque converter) with and without towing a load? Just got a Kiwi 3 (and OBD Fusion) and going to start monitoring my transmission temps as I am thinking of getting a travel trailer later on.

 

Hi Capt Jrod, Thanks for the advice. I am going to make sure that it is perfect when I drive off. My dealer is in Ottawa and we live in Toronto. A 5 hour trip without a trailer. Too far to go to fix little things. I will let you know how things go when we pick it up.

 

@planemaker on the livinlite owners facebook page they are rumored to have cancelled the camplite line at KZ/Thor. No orders are being accepted past July. I don't know if this affects your decision, but I thought I'd pass it along.

What trans temps are you seeing on your Scan Gauge ?

 

Didn't break 180deg, but to be fair, it was ~65deg outside and I stuck to ~55mph. Because I've towed other TTs of similar dimensions before, I would expect trans temps of ~200-~210 on a summer afternoon (~105deg?) pulling a grade like that. My answer to that problem: don't pull a grade like that on a hot summer afternoon. I plan those "events" for early morning or at night.

 

Wanted dual axles, a slide, and to stay under 2 tons with all or our stuff. Camper can handle 5540 gross weight.

 

Very Nice. Those tandem axles make all the difference. It is hard to find small campers with this. That rig will tow nicely! Here's our rig!

 

That is sweet! What is the dry weight if you do not mind?

 

The dry weight was 3270 without the 2 bottles and battery. So I figure 3400 with them. We always have been light campers so I figure we will be at or under 2 tons when we go. Since I am retired USAF we stay on military campgrounds with full hookups. So we will never haul water with the exception of maybe 5 gallons just for using the crapper if the need arises. I wanted something that my truck could handle well and it tows like a champ. With 4 brakes on the camper the P3 brake controller brings it nicely to a stop. 80% of our vacations are out west so I also wanted the extra braking power for those long steep runs out there.

 

Nice shot and set up with the kids. Making memories is what it is all about. I started taking my daughter camping when she was an infant and now she is a world traveler (South America, Europe, and Asia.

 

The kids are the real reason for the camper... When the oldest was three we took a 2 week trip and stayed in hotels and tent camped. One week in she wanted to be home in her bed. The camper lets them relate back to home and they have they own bed. Strange hotels did not make for good sleep. The tent was fine, but the lovely wife quickly shot that down. Our trailers weigh almost exactly the same after I looked up the specs on yours. You will definitely enjoy your purchase. I had a single axle on the last trailer but I never felt good about long trips. Tongue weight was always a balancing act. You will also love the narrower width when it comes to narrower two lane roads. I bought this trailer with big plans to go out west. I have a small window that I can get the family out there before the extra curricular activities absorb our lives lol. If you read about camplite, I can pretty much keep this trailer forever due to its design and materials. Once the kids are grown it will serve us well in retirement. I keep it inside heated storage when not on the road. I call it my "mini museum" lol.

 

Wish I could put mine inside but I don't have the space or money.

Thanks for the info. We have a older 2 axel hybrid that is close to the same weight. It handles fine. Looking to go all “hard” side and you guys keep posting pics of your trailers that I cannot make up my mind!

 

We had thought about the 1808 Winnebago but they were a bit pricey for me (over 20K). I am 64 and getting ready to retire so didn't want years worth of payments to deal with. Evergreen went out of business in 2016. They hired some financial guru who made terrible decisions and took the company down in 3 years. Because of that most of the 16 and few 17 models are advertised as used but in fact they are new and you can get them for a good price. Ours was never titled until we bought it. The Camper we liked most is the Keystone Bullet 1750RK. They are beautiful but had only 1 axle otherwise I would have bought that in a heartbeat.
