On Amazon u can get a OBD 2 scanner called ELM 327 it cost about 20$ and them u buy the OBD fusion app in the Apple App Store for $10 with in the app u buy the Toyota PIDs that will allow u to see ur transmission temp. U just have to program one of the gauges as a transmission temp

Do you monitor A/T Temp No.1 or A/T Temp No.2?
Does it open the thermostat as temp check mode does?

You can do both but temp 1 is the pan temp and temp2 is torque converter temp. To check fluid level used temp 1

I knew A/T No.1 is used for temp check mode.

Pan temp? TC temp? Where are the sensors located?

What about fluid flow through the thermostat in temp check mode?

    Late 2017 model. Low fluid.
Had to go to the dealer 4 times before they checked it. I actually had to show the service manager the pdf found here for the procedure before he believed I knew what I was talking about. Was indeed low.
Called corporate to address my concerns regarding low fluid for 7k miles during hard wheeling. Was givin 100k mile platinum warranty.
This was around new year of 2018.

Is there a particular plant these are attributed to? Or are both plants just as susceptible?
Seems silly to have such a complicated procedure replace a dipstick, when even the trained mechanics can’t perform it without reference. Then again, captive audience.

My 2017 Tacoma was 3 quarts low on automatic transmission fluid. The problem didn't show up until I had around 16k miles on it. It was jumping out of gear real bad going around sharp bends. Took it to my dealer when the problem started. They checked it out and said nothing was wrong and adjusted the computer. A week later I went to back out of my sloped driveway and the truck jumped out of gear and literally sat there and did nothing. Went straight to the dealer and told them what happened. The cocky service assistant asked when I wanted to bring it in.....told them ASAP but needed a car to get to work.....no work no pay. He looked at me and asked when I could bring it in. No offer of a rental car for a day. So I made an appointment for a month later (good Friday) that was my next day off. Last week the transmission was having a horrible day jumping in and out of gear and now the service engine light came on. I happened to be on the way home from work so I stopped again. My wife was off the next day so I was able to use her car to get work.
They called me later on the next day and told me to stop in on way home to pick up a rental. When I stopped I basically got accused of draining transmission fluid from the transmission. I didn't realize I had free service for 2 years and changed my oil my self at 10k. So they were trying to say I may have drained the transmission instead. The dealer is now insisting there is no damage to my transmission. Needles to say I have a formal complaint into Toyota.

FYI, If you do your own service, make sure to keep good records and receipts. The manufacturer is going to use any excuse to get out of their warranty obligations.

'17 OR, bought in Feb '17. Found out for my 10k maintenance that mine was 3/4 quart low. They topped it off and I was told to keep an eye on it. It definitely smoothed out some of the gear shifts....Should I talk with my dealer about some concern and possible added warranty?

I'm having the dealer check mine this week, I'll ask for extended warranty if it is found to be low....

I am pretty sure they would just fill up with 2 qu and then tell you that it wads full, why would they open a can of worms for no reason.

There was actually a guy on here who attempted to change is oil and drained the transmission instead and added 6 quarts to the engine....LOL Not at all saying anything about your situation, but it has happened before. And yes some trucks have come with 3 quarts low.

Mine was built in September 2017, and purchased in October. I better get the transmission fluid checked.. but dealers look for all and every excuse not to do it!!!

Read the thread gentlemen . All the info you need is within the first post .
I am about to change the title of the thread to include new 2018 Tacomas . Toyota just doesnt listen to their customers . Hundreds and I mean hundreds of complaints went in to corporate for this issue. Mostly Tacoma World members mind you . I am not too sure how far the word has spread through the internet
