Maybe I'm ignorant but the exhaust system shouldn't make much of a difference.

It's the content coming out of the cat that makes or breaks the test. Too the extent that the exhaust line creates back pressure on the engine, there could be some effect, but again, as long as you have enough back pressure so the exhaust is in the cat for long enough to remove the unburned hydrocarbons, the rest shouldn't matter.

The intake could have an impact on that but a more open flowing intake should only help get a complete clean burn than a more restricted one.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Of course CA is loaded with restrictive laws that may or may not actually affect the outcome of the test but the nanny state must be served.

Both mods are carb legal right? I see no reason why it shouldn't have passed.

Was it a K&N Intake or just the filter? The filter is perfectly fine, the full intake is what is not CARB legal. The exhaust doesn't matter as long as the outlet pipe comes out past the rear axel.

Was he picky with the visual inspection? Some places will fail you just because they know its not a CARB legal intake or exhaust.

Live in SD area of SoCal here... can anyone recommend a smog check place that will overlook my K&N intake? My smog check was just rejected today, I don't want to have to buy a stock box and replace it just to pass...

No-go, visual inspection required under the hood and any smog inspector around has to confirm the legality of any after-market parts, including intake kits. K&M cold air on an '08 Taco is illegal in the state of California. FANTASTIC.

Damn that sucks. On my truck my k&n is legal, I lost my sticker but they will replace it as long as you can prove to them it's your truck.
