S mode shifting

You can manually shift in this mode, but if you leave it in "S4" rather than making a gear selection, it will shift up and down between the 4.

 

It is NOT a manual mode. It IS a gear limiter. In "S"mode, I believe, the ECU uses a different set of shift/throttle tables.

ECT also uses different tables for shifting as well as throttle.

 

you CAN shift it like a manual shifts, however, you will always have the automatic capabilities of downshifting by pressing the accelerator harder. It's a very strange concept, but does allow for more power through manual gear selection.

 

Isn't it kind of strange that it is preset to 4th gear when switching from D to S? What happens if youre going 85 mph or around there, and shift to S? Do the rpms go way up, or does it shift to a higher gear?

 

RPMs go way up. It's preset to 4 so that it avoids the 2 overdrive gears (5 and 6). It is meant for towing mostly. As far as I know there is no difference in shift points or any throttle mapping in the S mode. S only stands for sequential, not sport.

 

So what really is the difference between automatic "D" mode and "S" mode in 6th gear?

I was thinking more along the lines of a rebuilt tranny, but you're right, even those probably run over $2k. But yeah a NEW tranny is well into the 4s!

 

The manual says it will go to S4 or S5 depending on the speed, you can try seeing if you can hit S5 at higher speeds if you want though.

I usually keep it below 60 when I go D to S and it's always been S4.

 

If you are going too fast it will just beep at you and not do anything.

How fast is too fast? Oh wait, you're talking downshift, not D-S mode

 

Not sure. Probably if revs exceed 4-5 k. It mostly happens going from 2nd to 1st at a stop. You can go from D to S at 80 with no problem. (4th)

 

It cancels AI-SHIFT control.

 

Is it ok to use for engine braking, like often done with a manual? I'm leary to do it with a load, (trailer). Must add some wear to the torque converter no? Or not enough to worry about?
