So I’m not sure if anybody has one of these, but they make hologram HUD’s that will project speed and so forth on your windshield. Wanted some opinions on which one would be the best bang for the buck, they’re inexpensive too, so I figured why not. Can some people help me look for a good one?

Why not just look at the speedometer that’s mere inches below the windshield. People these days have enough distracting them they don’t need flashing numbers and squiggly lines in there field of vision:rolleyes:

Some of those are really cool. I love the Exploride one but man $499 is a hard pill to swallow.

Reminds me of the new Oakley ski goggles that have a HUD built into them that syncs with your phone. THE FUTURE IS NOW.

What would you possibly want to pay attention to while you’re skiing down a mountain ???

It'll give you speed, total runs done, how many turns, etc. Actually pretty damn cool... for the 1% professional skiers who actually need it.

To answer your rhetorical question - because they aren’t necessary or useful but there is a good chance they reduce safety:

    https://arstechnica.com/cars/2015/07/heads-up-displays-in-cars-can-hinder-driver-safety/

This isn’t news either, HUDs were tried in some luxury cars back in the late 90s and fairly promptly discontinued because they resulted in more accidents. Having distractions in your field of view while driving is a bad thing.

The idea that a hud is good because it “keeps your eyes on the road” sounds good in marketing but is wrong in actual practice. What it actually does is constantly distract you from what you need to be doing - looking where you are going. Keeping speed information below your field of view on the dash is desirable because you can check it only when you choose too knowing contextually when it is safe to do so rather than having it distracting all the time.

HUDs make a lot of sense in an airplane because airplanes don’t follow other airplanes five feet apart. Nor do other airplanes rapidly stop in front of them. Nor do other airplanes suddenly pull out of driveways in front of them. They are exactly the wrong thing for a car though.

I run into Johnny Collinson all the time at Alta, he uses the same Smith IO/X goggles I do.

Probably sold to dentists along with their $10K Yeti mountain bikes...

I don't even think johnny skis anymore, all about the lifestyle shots nowadays lol. But yes, I have worked in shops for years now and only the raddest dad dentists/docs/lawyers care to waste their money to know if they skied "fast" or how many runs they got.

Uh, Tacoma World of course. How else will they know what size tires will fit with a 3in lift WHILE skiing down a mountain?
