    Hey all,

So I'm in the market for a new Tacoma, and while the TSS on the 2018 orginally put me off, I don't really have much choice at the moment as 2017s have been pretty much cleared off the lots. That being said, it could be that in a few years most vehicles come equipped with TSS style safety systems, and I imagine it can only improve the resale value and even help with insurance.

Anyway, the curiosity got to me after looking at the black camera box on the windshield, what happens to it during windshield replacement? I'm assuming it's held on by adhesive just like the rearview mirror and if that's true, it must be disconnectable so that it doesn't just hang there during replacement. So not talking about the windshield replacement anymore, what would happen to the system if you disconnected and removed the box?

I realize it's probably not the best idea as 1. you'd be left with that black vinyl outline on the windshield, and 2. all of the safety features can be turned off anyway. However, from what I understand, the PCS still defaults to on after recycling the iginition? Do you guys see Toyota changing this with an update in the near future?

    Thanks!

    Lol @JS760

I thought the sensors for TSS were in the grille? Not on the windshield?

TSS is in the grille. i think the "black box near the rear-view" you're describing is the Go-Pro mount.

And from what I know is that camera snaps quick pictures in case of an accident. That was in the owners manual.

I'm blushing from the effort you put in to that post, thanks!

To answer your question, I'm asking whether anyone sees Toyota issuing an update to the Multi-information display/TSS system to where disabling the PCS keeps it that way until manually turned on again. If that kind of update is even a thing.

Are you being serious? I was under the impression that the camera was some kind of special infrared or radar type.

EDIT: Actually it looks as if you're right. The vehicle records all of the driving data as well.

What really scares me though is all of the disclaimers for when the PCS/LDA might not work properly, or when it can't detect a pedestrian e.g. if they're too tall or walking too fast or wearing a rain jacket... o_O

He was talking about the radar sensor on the grille. Who goes around cleaning that daily?

And on the windshield, according to the manual, even water droplets or oily residue are enough to make the camera sensor malfunction.

You are the primary pedestrian detection though. If it is in the position to "go to work", it means you've already ephed up too. I had it on a Toyota rental a few months back and it was okay. No issues with it.

I will say my Subaru has their (Eyesight) version of this and it almost got me rear ended about a month back. It was super cold and the cars in front of me at the stop light were pumping out a nice thick cloud of exhaust. When the light turn green, I went to accelerate and it activated and slammed on the brakes. It thought the wall of exhaust "smoke" was an obstacle/vehicle. Thankfully the car behind me was paying attention.

Otherwise its a pretty nice safety feature. I dont rely on it, but it is nice to know that is *should* get involved if I glance down to screw with the radio at the wrong time.

LOL... honestly you don’t notice it because it is up and behind the rear-view mirror from the driver’s perspective. From the passenger’s perspective i’d think that GoPro mount would be the bit of wonderment. It’s certainly the first thing two of my passengers noticed.
