I'm sorry if 50 people dying unnecessarly is not proof enough for you. I think if one of those 50 people would have been someone you cared for, you would think differently. Sure breaking the law is bad, but at the same time there needs to be a reasonalbe effort to control the situation with the least force and unncessary risk of death as possible, especially if no threat to the officer is present.

If the boy at the Phillys game would have died from the taser, would you think the action of the police were justifed? Hell no! The arguement of him wearing clothes so you don't know what he might have had on him is really funny, becuase do cops now just taze someone that they are questioning just in-case they have something on them?.... that's just stupid. Was the kid dumb, yes. Has there ever been a police officer or security guard seriously injured or died from a fan running out on the field? Probably not.

Of the THOUSANDS of times tasers have been used, 50 people have died. If any of those deaths were caused by a single taser shot on a person who was CLEARLY obeying officers and doing what was told, then yes, that is unjustified.

In the case of the Philly fan, and in the cases noted in the story, this wasn't true. From the story, MOST of the deaths caused by the tasers was due to abuse of officers using the tasers. The Philly fan wasn't obeying the orders from officers, and came through without serious injury.

You're implying that I think that a) a single taser shot is enough to frequently kill a person, and b) the people being tased are getting that treatment for no just cause. I think neither of those things

50 attributed deaths...17000 departments around the country use tasers

pretty damn good results if you ask me

50 is just from a single taze, there are hundreds of actual deaths from multiple tazings. Still, the question remains, if someone you cared for was killed by a taser for something like running out on a baseball field, would you feel different? I'm saying the risk of death supercedes the use of a taser in cases such as the Philly game. Another unanswered question, what if the kid would have died, would it be a justified action?

as of right now, IF the kid had died the cops actions still have court history that tasing for defensive resistance (fleeing) is justified

again...i think youre missing the fact that myself, and mws4ua are both against unjustified tasings

unjustified tasings or abuse that results in death is worse

put youself in the shoes of an officer for just a few minutes tho

there have been several well documented cases of overzealous fans bringing harm to coaches and players...on and off the field

it is a KNOWN fact that you cannot enter the field as a fan

combine that with the fact that you have to make a split second, life altering/ending decision while attempting to follow a departments policy, the law, and preserve the peace, and safety of everyone in the stadium

the quickest option with LEAST chance of injury to ANYONE was the taser

tasers also make a very loud audible POP and buzz when deployed...even on the field the first missed shot shouldve been enough warning for the kid, but id be willing to bet that the officer and security staff were also yelling at him to stop...he failed to comply with a lawful order and was attempting to evade capture/detainment

this tasing is completely justified in my book

im not saying every subject deserves to be tased...in fact...in a little under 2 years since ive been issued/trained/hit with the taser...ive only deployed it a couple of times

it quickly and safely de-escalated situations that could potentially escalate into injuries to officers, subjects, and innocent people

The guy got what he was asking for, especially considering the actions of Philly fans in the past.

I had just read the news article, and not watched the video. I just watched the video, and feel more that it was clearly unjustifed. There was a grounds keeper within almost arms length of the boy. Even the crowd is booing. Seems like a SG or PO was trigger happy and just wanted to try out his new toy. Here is an interesting read... http://www.philly.com/inquirer/opinion/20100505_Editorial__Electrifying_experience.html

Now in some cases where there is a direct threat to a SG or PO that a taser can be used. But not this case. I think there is going to be a lawsuit soon for unnecessary force. He should have been warned before that he was about to be tazed if he didn't stop.

Um, isn't that who usually ends up tackling the person anyway. And, it's not like the 17 year old boy was a big guy. He was almost surrounded.

    wrong.

So if someone is coming at you in the street with a knife or gun, and the cop uses a taser or gun to stop him, then thats okay?

Or would you say...."gahh, fat ass cop, you couldve just takled him".

doesnt matter WHAT his intentions were. He did NOT belong on the field.

The cop did his job. The end.

BTW, he is not a cop, he is a security guard.

Edit: I stand corrected. I had read that he was a security guard.

I don't pity the boy. Sure, prosecute the kid. But the same result can be carried out with less means. The punishment must fit the crime, I don't think that running out on a filed warrents a taze, especially if he wasn't warned he was about to get it. I am against people abusing there power just because they can.
