Agreed. But I would have assumed the manual would have been a given in this vehicle, same with jeeps (gross) and miatas, minis etc. enthusiast vehicles. I just would have put money on the 5 speed staying based on that, but it’s just not the case. Mind blown over here. I got mine tho.

Ejewels threads are something else. I feel like he is a Picasso troll, an Andy Kaufman type going for the long con. I am entertained.

Im a bit surprised myself, now you're lucky to find a truck with a manual, 30 years ago it was the opposite, in fact we called manual transmissions "standard transmissions" as it was the standard equipment then..

Maybe if the Tacoma didn't become so mainstream it would have retained a larger model selection with the MT.

I love my MT, but Crawl Control looks pretty dope. ...Still hate driving automatics, though.

I'd never even seen a manual 3rd gen until I test drove a used 16 sport for giggles during my 10 k service.

AT are better period. By 2005 our entire fleet was AT including heavy equipment. We were able to hire from a larger pool of drivers/operators. On the repair side we had less work because driver error was practically eliminated. Of all the vehicles I've owned, only one was MT, and I had to pull the burned out clutch vs two AT out of more than a dozen autos.

But the MT are way more FuN to drive and they keep your concentration on the driving.
I hope they never stop making them, I might want to own one again for kicks. And as a side bonus, I won't have to worry about it being stolen and If I get car jacked they won't go more than a few yards!

A few years back a kid on TTORA got car jacked and the jackass thief couldn't drive the truck, so he just took his wallet and ran away.

do you have an auto or mt? It’s funny, I actually thought the same that a truck like this is Jeep-like cult-like but all my buddies who have trucks looked at me like I was crazy for going manual. And with all the modern tech it’s now weird (to even some enthusiasts) to not get an auto.

Mine says auto. (However to be fair mine says 'auto' because we spent alot of time discussing traction control on 3rd gen, and I wanted people to know what my vehicle was to minimize confusion)

It's a little weird when you think of it in terms of technological advancement. For a LONG time manual transmissions provided better gas mileage, control, and technical precision that you couldn't get from autos. That's not usually the case anymore. Autos have jumped ahead and now get better mileage, shift smoother, give more precise control--and also allow the car to do all sorts of neat things electronically (crawl control, torque vectoring, etc).

Performance/sports car owners scoffed at autos for a while too--but a double-clutch automatic gearbox with things like launch control really send autos to the next level.

"I'll only by manuals" is replacing the "I'll only buy crank windows because I dont trust those electric ones!" mindset. I love driving manual transmission vehicles, but there are lots of very compelling reasons to get automatics in this day and age.

Manual. Otherwise I’d just ride a razor scooter.

I thought you were going to buy the Automatic since you didn't wanna wait for the Manual, guess you decided to wait it out then if all your truck buddies are making fun you for going Manual.

Compelling is in the eye of the beholder. For me, there isn’t anything compelling about an auto. I don’t care about the 1 mpg (roundabouts) loss, I don’t even count mpg. Simply- when I fill up at the pump, it costs what it costs, and that’s the cost for me to enjoy every single drive. I wind it out too, as we’ve discussed. It’s not as simple as “I’ll only buy crank windows because...”. It’s the user experience, interface/interaction with the vehicle as well as the fact that it’s a simple gearbox. In other words, I’m sure power windows have come a long way (more durable designs, more durable polymers) but the auto tranny, specifically this one with no dipstick and a total waste of time in just checking fluid levels, is a headache. Way different than power windows, considering all the unsatisified owners. Though to be fair most insatisfied owners may be pussy footing it, it’s still a headache that could be avoided IF someone were to appreciate a manual trans.

I’ve been dwelling online all day since apparently I don’t work at my actual job and even in the serious off road community it seems to be a 50/50 Split. The vocal guys that equate their stick shift with their manhood contests, and the affeminite sissy auto guys that are really driving a minivan in the same vehicle. In other words, even the hardcore off road guys are a split with it.
