I admit I am new to the typing on the forums, but have been reading post for a few months
while installing upgrades to my truck.
Don't have any idea about forums, besides trying to find out info on what I am working on and even at the moment that I am typing it feels weird like the tv shows that you see a person talking to a shrink. But email said I should make my first post since I had just become a new member.
After purchasing a 16' SR5 4x4 Access Cab I read a lot of good info that people had posted from their own projects which has helped me make decisions with my ride. I have built a lot of custom trucks, but all have been Chevy S-10's.
But over the years prices have went through the roof for the price of trucks and you really dont get anything for the money but some new gadgets, bells and whistles stuff. So after my last truck was totaled by someone cutting over and putting me in a pole, it was time for a new truck.
Had not had anything new off the lot ever, always bought and fixed up the way I wanted it. And the old ZR2 wasn't worth putting money in it, and the price of the new ones are way over priced by far. Plus I know for a fact they don't make anything like they use to....
My uncle is Toyota everything & had always been on me to get a Tacoma, so needing a truck, and pricing for what options I actually need and a few I wanted, I picked out a 16" SRS 4x4 Access Cab. Liked the TRD Sport but most of the stuff I would be paying extra for I would never have a use for since I don't plan on taking a new truck off road to trail ride or do any hard core off roading, though I do like off roading a lot , I don't like it to be mine that is get ragged out and muddy. Also for the price difference it gave me a lot of funds to do my up-grades and still have a truck, and not a vehicle that is more like a entertainment center on wheels. Not knocking anyones choice of models, but just want a truck to be a truck
At first I didn't think I made a good choice buying a Tacoma, mainly it was too nice and didn't want to damage anything. Plus the days of doing your own maintenance seems to be coming to a end when I couldn't find the transmission dipstick. Again I found out that the days of checking your auto-fluid are over by all manufactures and was reassured from a Toyota certified mechanic that the fluid was good for a 100k miles before changing.
I can say now that I won't wait that long, since I paid for a oil change at 1k miles as a breaking change. Which I was told that it didn't need break-in change until 10k miles, but there was know way I was going that long on a new aluminum motor before changing the oil, so at a thousand miles I paid an used a coupon for the change, and plan on changing every 5k miles. Maybe I'll be wasting money but I really can't see a motor lasting changing the oil every 10k miles, at least it will give me some piece of mind.
Not going to type anymore for now but would like to thank many people that I probaly never will meet for type there learning lessons on this site it helped me make a choice for a good truck, not freaking out over recalls, and getting info to chose aftermarket parts that had been used by other Tacoma owners, and the is why I typed Tacoma World seems to be a great site info site for new Tacoma owners. Will finish filling in my account info and uploading pics this week as I get time. Have worked the last week installing stuff, so need to wash and get some pictures to show off my efforts

Just learn to wade your way through the occasional craziness, and you will have a good time. Of course, the craziness is usually all in good fun too...

I agree that there is a ton of valuable information on this site. But to find it, you have to wade through even more BS.

    Welcome! Couple of thoughts.

Dipsticks were gone from the v6 models from 2005 on, and in the 4's from 2016 on. Don't buy the 100k malarkey. There are threads here on how to check and change the fluid both. @gearcruncher will confirm that a drain and fill every 30k or so to refresh the additive packages is money well spent.

10k is really not much stress on modern oils, even dino. If you don't do extended OCIs, at least use dino and save a few bucks there. Or at least follow the owner manual guide for service intervals. You don't think they'd really risk additional warranty work by artificially extending OCIs do you. And if you're just not trusting enough, have your oil analyzed at someplace like Blackstone labs. They'll tell you how much life is left. Mine scores in the 14k range. I aim for 10k, 1) becasue it's easy to double up on the maintenance required light 2) that leave me some slack in case life gets in the way of hitting right on 10k.

Since you're an S10 guy, I'll just drop this in.
