I changed mine at 65000 and they had noticeable wear on them. When we talk about plugs we are talking emissions and efficiency. Iridium is a long life plug. You will not lose efficiency early on. Most don't drive their vehicles as much as I do so it really doesn't matter what they choose. They also don't hold on to their vehicles for any length of time. We keep our vehicles at least 15-20 years.

It appears that Toyota specifies a 30000 mile change out because they have NGK on one side and ND on the other. They want them out early. I can tell you the difference with the factory plugs and Iridium is smooth throttle response, less ping and less soot residue on the tail pipe.

You can go from a regular plug to Iridium. You don't want to go from Iridium to regular if the engine is designed to run Iridium. I have the 2.7ltr in my 2003 Tacoma, the 5.7ltr in my Tundra and 4.0ltr in my 2014, they all have Iridium.

Toyota does some bonehead stuff like all manufacturers. The mismatch plugs is one of them. So just because they specify a specific plug in the manual doesn't mean that is the one that you should use. They want you in for maintenance so they can make $$$. I am pretty sure the mismatch plugs contributed to knocking problem on these trucks and they had to release a TSB to reprogram the computers to compensate for it. I am also thinking that may have contributed to excessive emissions that may have an effect on the pump that is failing prematurely.

Pretty sure the secondary air pump fails because of moisture and not being programmed to run long enough on the 2012. It has nothing to do with the spark plugs.

My new to me truck w/79K miles on the original plugs. I will stay w/OEM Denso & change ~30K miles from here on out. All were >.045".

That is not the reason. The reason, per my 2007 maintenance schedule: "Required under the terms of the Emission Control Warranty."
I switched to NGK Iridiums at 50K; they went 101K. I did re-gap at 80K, but truck was running excellent when I replaced them with Denso Long Life Iridiums.

Toyota is partial owner of both Denso and NGK; I believe that is the reason they put both in our V6.

I’m sure the engineers for Toyota aren’t putting in spark plugs just to get people to do go to the dealership to have new plugs put in. Toyota makes no money from shop visits. Only the dealership does. I do have rolls of tin foil for sale though...

The age old debate.....I use U11s. I put them in set at .040, they come out in 30,000 miles at .044, .001 out of spec. If they are all the same, I save #1 as an ongoing record. The plugs I pulled at 30K look exactly the same as the ones I pulled at 150K. That gives me a periodic check and peace of mind. I don't want 80,000 mile plugs.
