That's not your mileage. It's your kilometerage. And it's messing with my tiny American brain.

Mine has been a solid 20 since the day I drove off the lot.

    Mostly stuff I built.
My truck is a pig... close to 900 lbs of armor hanging off of it plus e rated tires and a lift. I am getting 15-17 depending on how hard I drive it.

Since new, my 2017 SR 5spd manual makes a metallic clunk, from the vicinity of the tranny, if the clutch isn't released ever so gingerly. This is in all gears at any speed. I hear the same clunk when engaging the clutch to roll to a stop. The truck has 600 miles on it now. Any ideas? ...Normal?

No idea on what it is, but no, its not normal. I have pretty much the same truck as you and don't have any sound like you describe.

I have the clunk too (6MT TRD sport) and have had it since new; I’m at 22k miles now. It’s most noticeable for me going over a speed bump - sometimes I’ll depress the clutch quickly to keep the truck from bogging/bucking in low rpms in first or second.

Tbh I don’t think it’s a real issue - just slop associated with a body on frame truck with the components that come with it.

Mine doesn’t sound necessarily like a clunk but def a metallic hollow “popping” sound. Even while driving if I try hard enough I can hear this metallic vibration resonating from under the stick. Sitting still with the truck off you can hear this noise if rowing through the gears. And yes going over bumps in neutral makes a rattle can noise that to me is a little unsettling. Have been told this is a normal characteristic of the manual from other members but wish I knew how and what makes the rattle in neutral. As to the tinny popping noise while shifting I’m not sure if it’s just the sound of the tranny shifting and it resonating through the bell housing? Wish I had a good explanation from someone on this.
And have been curious as to if this is something that is present on all manuals. So all 3rd gen manual owners. Do you have a rattle in neutral or the tinny “popping” noise when cruising through gears? If your not sure test it out and get back to us. However it is very evident and not something that I have searched out. I love my truck but this is something that concerns me if not normal. Thanks OP for bringing this back up!

I hear a metallic noise sometimes when clutching. Reminds me of closing hi-hats together.

When I turn my Ricer Mode ON against some Ferrari's and Lambos... I noticed during super quick shifting truck doesn't go in gear completely, is that just slow synchronizers?:anonymous:

Mine does all of this to include a higher frequency "note" when cruising at speed. Honestly I have shrugged it off as the sounds of a truck. It shifts and drives smooth and seems to get better week after week so Ima just roll with it and have fun :burnrubber:

When I rev to 3500+ my tranny will take a small but noticible amount of time longer to go into gear when shifting. I only rev really high when I'm racing some impatient slushbox tailgater/road raging aggressive passing douchebags. Lol

That's a better description. Mine sounds the same. It only happens when applying or releasing the clutch pedal. If I release the clutch pedal slowly, there's no noise. I just tested applying and releasing the clutch pedal, parked running in neutral with my door open, and the sound is there, only much less pronounced. Crappy quality clutch components, maybe?

Just got my latest Consumer Reports - As predicted...They warned people to stay away from a 2016 Tacoma. If you dig a little closer you will find it's likely transmission related. I have two friends that also bought 2016's and they both bitch about the AT - Even after the TSB mod. I'm approaching 45K on my "16 Sport (with an MT, of course) and I have no complaints !! In fact, if it were totaled tomorrow - I'd want the same truck. My other ride is a 2018 4R SR5 Premium...they do recommend used 4R's and praise their reliability but obviously compare it to a Highlander or Pilot...Proving, once again, that CR's testers are all biased toward Concrete/Asphalt vehicles. Yes. Mostly the clutch compressing in and out. Sometimes it’s louder than others. I used to here it a lot more just sitting inside with the door closed but I messed around a bit with it today and I could barely hear it. Weird. Thanks for checking it out and verifying.

Absolutely. I’m cool with it and yes it is a truck. Even though it shifts so smooth! Just was curious if others experienced the metallic sound as I had never heard that in any other stick I’ve driven. But all the manuals I’ve been in other than this have been mid 90s or older. Have been driving my 95 4runner in AZ for past three months then got back in my truck and just couldn’t believe how much I love this thing!
