Thanks. I've noticed that some of the 01-04's came with 4.30's. I was just curious what you had and how you liked the set up now that you're living at higher elevation.

Yea, I worded that wrong. 4.30 and 33s were very much “okay” on the road putting around. But wheeling a manual in the rocks while being undergeared sucks. It also sucked while towing.

4 cyl, but i'm automagic :duel:
my brother has a 98 with the manual, and matching rpm he's slower in 1st gear and faster in top gear (I don't remember if that was with the 3.53 or 4.10 in his)
a lot of it actually has to do with torque converter and no lockup in low gear

I went to Moab again last weekend. My goal was to bikepack the White Rim in Canyonlands but we got a lot of snow the first night and the Park Service closed a large portion of the road. I was still able to do a solid out and back ride but I'll have to go back for the whole thing. Oh! And I did some wheeling:

Love your truck, super clean and tasteful! Exactly the direction I hope to take my 2nd Gen RC. You also have some awesome photos, what do you shoot with?

I've been looking at getting a hitch mount bike rack - how do you like your 1up? Does it ever get in the way when getting in or out of the Wildernest? How securely does it hold the bikes when off road?

Thanks, I appreciate it and can't wait to see your build.

I shoot mostly with a Canon 60D and a couple of fixed lenses. I shoot a little bit of film too, also on a Canon.

The 1up is great. Incredibly durable and the bikes don't budge offroad. I can have my MTB fully loaded with bikepacking gear on the rack and it still feels sturdy. I've banged it on rocks and stumps a couple of times offroad and it's held up well.

Having a hitch mount rack definitely gets in the way getting in and out of the Wildernest and I miss having full access to my tailgate as a table. At some point, I'd like to have a rear bumper that allows me to mount the bike rack on a swingout. For now, it's doable. I can climb in and out around the rack.

Which model of the 1 up are you using? I've been looking at switching to a hitch rack as well. I've been looking at 1Up, Kuat, and Thule.

I absolutely love it. Can accelerate uphill in 5th. Crawl speed is much better. Way less clutch riding in the rocks. Fantastic.

I would note that my truck is a dedicated wheeler. I don’t drive on the interstate unless I’m going to a wheeling trip. 70 mph is about 3200rmp. Probably not the ideal strip if it’s a commuter.

It’s the heavy duty model for 2 bikes. Even the nicest Thule feels cheap after using a 1up. The Kuats are nice.

Sweet. Thanks for the feedback. I’ll keep that in mind when searching. Is there an easy way to lock the bikes to the rack?
