Seriously? That's like the worst engine Toyota ever produced. They only made it for 2 years for some reason. :boink:

Installed a small lift on the Mrs. T4R the other day.

Yeah i disagree with that. Plenty of folks turbo there 22re's aftermarket with no issues. And there was nothing wrong with it from the factory.

Was the V6 that killed it off. And the 3.slow was the worse motor they ever made and put in a toyota 4x4 IMO. The only good thing to come from that motor was the 5vzfe 5 years later.

Arguably. The factory turbo setup was a joke, and oiling was definitely sub-par.

Aftermarket turbo setups for a 22RE were very good, in fact, I think LCE is still producing a kit.

The biggest problem with the 3.Slo was the head gasket issue, while very expensive to repair, if done correctly and in a timely fashion, were fairly reliable engines. Don't get me wrong, I'd never own one again. For the 15 extra horsepower, I'd much rather mod a 22RE just like the one in my current '94 DD, and it'll flat outrun any stock 3.SLo any day of the week. I was more referring to the nature of unreliability with the 22RET in relationship to the factory turbo and oiling design. You guys have your opinions but I've been working on these trucks since 1984 and am quite opinionated myself.

LCE does still sell mutliple kits.

besides the HG issue though..its was a gutless gas hog of a motor. Made the truck move i guess though. Was never impressed with the 94 4runner I got to drive though.

I love the 22re, such a damn good motor haha I think the cool factor would be awesome to have a factory 22re-t and rebuild it right. Just be cool I think in an 87 4runner with a 3 link.

That said, I still don't think it was the worst motor ever made. Was still a 22re underneath.

You know your V6 is weak when they end up making a 4cyl right after that makes the same HP and TQ haha. Also the 3VZ-E unfortunately lived a long life in Toyota trucks and 4runners, absolute POS.

I think Toyota tried to copy the actually successful VG-30 and just plain failed for once. The VG-30 is also a 3.0 SOHC with either throttle body or MPFI and made way more power and was way stronger (up to 600hp on stock internals)

LCE cam, header, exhaust(cat delete), air intake, 4.88s, '98 4Runner E-Locker rear, ARB front, Sway-Away torsion bars, rear shackle lift, cheapie shocks, 33X10.50R15 General Grabber X3s, home made headache rack, BetterBuilt toolbox, new carpet, new seat, windshield, blah blah, Midland 75-822, ARB bumper, Warn M8000-S, Factor 55 thimble, blah blah, ARB compressor, Optima 34/78DT, blah blah, making a rear bumper now. Basically built it for hunting but I like driving so much that I drive it almost every day. It's kinda pokey but it's fun. No 3.4 but it gets you there! :D

Agreed, I got no love for 3.0s and they suck to work on. 22REs just rock! See above for properly built truck, except the SAS, which may come.

Yeah it's sad when you can swap in a 3400 out of, say, a '98 4Runner with 300k on the odo and still have twice the power of the 3.Slo when it was new. LOL

    Nice truck!

I had an 86 through part of hichschool. I loved that thing. Burned down though.

I've been daily driving my single cab with a 3.4l in it. Man it is fun. Even after I fix up the double cab..probably still mostly drive this truck. Just fun and gets way better gas mileage.

I think the 22re is the best I4 motor ever made(gas).

nah leave it be! Looks great as is, still classic looking but fun and capable. Don't SAS it...

The real downside to the 3VZ-Es legacy is that it essentially makes buying second and third gen pickups as well as 1st and 2nd gen runners a losing game unless they've been swapped or have the less common 22r or re. Basically ruined a couple of otherwise okay generations of trucks, also the horrible hydraulic actuated transfer case they used for a bit would rob another 30hp off the drivetrain so that's neat I guess haha.

I probably won't. I just bought an '84 with 121k on the ODO. I think the wife talked me into taking this one to Montana and leaving it at our property there so we have a buzz around truck for working on the cabin in the coming years. I'll probably just do the same stuff to the '84 that I did on this, but I'll have the advantage of the front solid axle. Probably convert it to EFI first.

Depending on how easy it is to fill where you are, propane conversions for those are a good option too. Anything to escape the little Hitachi carburetor though haha

That's actually a hell of a thought! I don't know how it'd be in -20 conditions though. I've got 2 propane forklifts and it's like an act of God to keep them thawed out enough to use.

I've got this with 93k actual miles that I'd probably swap from into the '84 because this truck is getting an LS engine and 1tons under it. At least that's the plan.

I'm not too sure either but usually the hard start issues with propane forklifts come from them being diesels. I'd imagine something as flammable as propane coupled with a sparkplug should be plenty volatile even in the negatives.
