both my 95 and 96 are J shift and ADD.

 

My 04 has J shift and add

 

Yup my '00 has J-shift and ADD. Best of both worlds IMO

 

How did the ADD work in a j-shift model? IIRC when I hit my push button it engages both the transfercase actuator, and the add actuator. And I manually push the lever forward and back for low range. Does this mean J shift actuated both low range and t-case activation and it automatically engaged ADD based on j-shifts position?

 

03-04 models are electronic controlled ADD, anything previous was vacuumed. I think the 4x4 module controls the ADD engagement.

 

This is exactly where I was confused. How the ADD works alongside the J-Shift transfer case.

 

Does anyone know what year Toyota stopped offering the 5VZ-FE in 5-lugs? My guess was 1998 when the PreRunner came out, but my 1998 5-Lug has the 5VZ.

Did any trucks prior to the PreRunner being introduced in 1998 have the 3RZ or was it strictly 2RZ or 5VZ?

 

My '01 has ADD and a J shift with an electronic ADD actuator.

ADD actuator is triggered as you pull the shifter from 2H to 4H.

 

Can anyone cross-check my transmission table? I've double checked it but I could have made a mistake somewhere.

just a position switch on the lever which triggers the 4wd relay which flips the ADD on or off either via electronic actuator or vacuum solenoids.

 

How can you tell if you have manual or automatic hubs? Just pull the hub cover off and check

 

and what was Madjk suggestion ? Kings , Icon, Fox ? picture of tne new ones will be a plus

Auto is just fine, no real downside to them. I have j shift and manual hubs and i wouldn't mind having jshift and add instead.

 

I don't understand peoples fascination with manual hubs.

Weaker CVs. Weaker Hubs. Less convenient. Unnoticeable improvement in fuel economy.

 

There's a reason they stopped making them, but it is kinda nice knowing no matter what they fail in the engaged position so they won't leave you without 4WD. The hubs themselves pretty much never break even when coupled to much stronger axles like those found on FZJ80s and such. But yeah the CVs aren't as strong unfortunately. My guess is because they're cheap to make... no 4WD computer, no vacuum or electronic nonsense in the way of 4WD... oh also nostalgia. Both trucks I've had have had manual hubs and they were about the cheapest 4WD Tacos you could get off the lots in their respective years.

 

Ask @Reh5108 and blowing up hubs and being completely screwed. Puts you in a worse spot than blowing a CV. Which, by the way, I still haven't done in thousands of offroad miles.

Also, that still doesn't explain the people that rip out their ADD to swap to manual hubs.

 

I had a similar issue when I first got my 04, a P0171 code popped up that took a couple months to figure out and turned out to be a slight vacuum leak on the supercharger. Mine was the cap on the EGR port (before I had the 7th installed) was ever so slightly off and created enough of a leak that it triggered the code.
