This is what I was wondering. I had a buddy who thought he car was going through gas like crazy. Turned out someone installed a plug into his tank and was draining tons of gas from it every other day.

Yes they caught the ass-hat who did that. It was his neighbor in his apartment complex.

That’s pretty smart in the neighbors part just got caught going to the well to many times. Side note if I caught him he would have a few facial fractures.

That sucks if somebody really drilled a hole in your tank for no more then 50$ Worth of gas. Hope everything gets figured out smoothly OP.

The idea is you can keep going back and getting more and more gas. In the case of my buddy, it was months before we were able to figure out where the gas was going. He was getting less than 150 miles per tank in a Honda civic. This actually went on for months. It was really hard to track down as the car had no leaks and was almost new. Dealer didn't even notice the plug in the tank. He found it when changing his tire, took a pic of the plug and asked "What the hell is this plug in my tank for?". Then it clicked.

Granted you're in SoCal and the gas is pricier there than it is where I'm at... but damn that's a lot of work/desperation for gas

Thats the thing about having a truck high off the ground, it much easier for people to slide under and mess with crap.

Catalytic converter theft was another big issue on Tacoma's, Thankfully Seatbelt Mike had them moved higher up into the engine bay to help stop that shit.

I will try to get a pic of the hole, right now the fire department plugged it. I'm waiting for the tow truck. Fire fighter, who is a tacoma brother too, said it looked like someone took a flat head screw driver and hammered into it to puncture it. I'm going to find this M%$^&FU*&R

    Warranty doesn’t cover vandalism.

I’d be looking into an insurance claim if repair costs are significant.

I had a locking gas cap on my Gen 1, one day I filled it and gas poured out onto the floor. It was then that I noticed that the locking cap had drill holes in it but it still worked. The thieves tried that first, then went for the tank. They drilled just above the steel skid plate. Since my tank was steel, I was able to repair it with a patch. But our plastic Gen 3 tanks are plastic so they have to be trashed- sorry OP, its going to be up to 1 grand to do that.

By the way, its possible to siphon gas from a Gen 3 by using a small hose with the tip cut off in a sharp angle to make it pointy to go down the filler pipe. Thieves have also cut the larger rubber tube behind the wheel well, as mentioned in a different thread here on TW, that is in the joint between the lower filler tube to the tank to get a larger hose into the tank. For this reason, I will not use a locking gas cap on it. Also thought about putting a pouch of a couple bills and a note under the gas door saying “hi, please take this money to fill up, thank you for not drilling my tank.”

As I park out on a street, I also put a magnet on the back of a HF driveway monitor and put it on the side of my truck at night - it alerts me in the house if someone is near my truck.

Fire department had to come out for that? Safety first I guess. Least you didn't spill 260 Gallons of fuel like we did a couple weeks ago. Lucky I was able to rip off a vacuum hose from a Wet/Dry vac and use that to funnel the fuel into our fuel bowser saved a lot of it from spilling out on the ground. Melted the plastic hose however :( . Could have been a lot worse.

He'd have to pay the deductible but vandalism won't raise your rates since you weren't driving it at the time it happened. Learned that when my truck was keyed.
