Any one here got a 1911?

First go round he said different length extractor so that's how I answered. I Missed the second time around he said ejector. Yes there are different length and shape ejectors. For open guns you want as long an ejector as possible. Not nearly as important on non open guns and standard length for that caliber are fine. Some guns need some tweaking.

The longer the ejector the sooner it hits the case and pushes it. If the ejector is too long it can cause the case to swing out before clearing causing a problem. Also have to ensure the ejector is relieved to not make contact with the magazine as it's seated.

 

Something else to check if we are talking ejectors and not extractors is the ejector cut in the slide. Many factory guns lately have their breach face cut to high so the case slides all the way up right on past the ejector track meaning the ejector never even touches the case. That's easy to see. Remove the slide put a round into the slide and look at the ejector track from behind. Can you see the case? If so then good to go. If not than the only fix is an oversized ejector, machine the ejector track higher and machine ejector to fit. But in reality a lot of these guns once the extractor is tuned right has flawless extraction and ejection so it's not usually worth all that work.

 

I did say extractor at first, got the two parts confused... but thank you for the answers, they were very helpful as I am still learning 1911's.

Honestly they all have their quirks and each individual 1911 from each manufacturer is different. Kimber has weird metallurgy issues (grainy) at time when doing custom work, Springfield overcuts their beavertail tangs making it a pain to blend (have to weld up and recut), RIA metallurgy and the list goes on and on. I prefer SA as a starting platform for a full donor gun but that's just my preference.

Getting into high end manufacturers doesn't always mean high end products. I just put a new gunsmith fit barrel in a high end manufacturer and their barrel fit was awful. The hood was .008" to short and the lower lugs were over cut to the point the barrel was starting to downlink, they would have broke in about 5000 rounds, accuracy would have been horrible and I doubt it headspace right. It was done so the slide blended with the frame instead of properly blending the slide to the frame after the barrel was cut.

I've had factory guns where the breach face is narrower than the Saami drawing of the caliber it's supposed to be shooting. A common issue is the breach faces cut to high like I memntioned before. Granted they still run fine with a properly tuned extractor so it's rarely addressed.

Keep in mind I'm looking at this from a machinist and gunsmith stand point. Off the shelf guns are USUALLY fine and if not the manufacturer will USUALLY cover repairing it. I'm looking at it from a hand fit everything to proper specs to make it run excellent reliable and accurately. They are looking at it from a mass produce standpoint. The higher end guns that are hand fit down an ssembly line of smiths have zero excuse for what I described above. But as long as they stand behind it that's fine also.

 

Have owned the following 1911s; Colt 1991 Commander, Charles Daly 5" (I know Phillipines), Kimber 5",
Dan Wesson Valor SS 5", and Dan Wesson Specialist SS 5". All are gone except the DW. What has been your experience with DW products since CZ took over.

I shot my two recently...

 

I'm outta practice. It's been like 10 days.

 

Shot on a darts target with a buddy last week. He shot his FN FiveSeven, I shot my 1911 officer. I cleaned his clock. He switched to his Ruger Mark IV target rimfire with glass. I cleaned his clock again. Good times.
